Data Science Ireland #10: Imagery, Video & the Future of Digital Communications

Details

It is the last Data Science Ireland meetup of 2018, as we go again at Huckletree D2 on Wednesday 5 December for the 10th Data Science Ireland meetup.

This is best opportunity to meet & network with like-minded individuals in the Data Science and AI community in Ireland, as well as learn from more great speakers on all things AI and data science. There will also be some pizza on offer too!

SPEAKERS

  1. Rafael Pages, CEO and Co-Founder at Volograms

Volograms believe that volumetric video (also known as 4D video) is the technology which will provide tools and content for the next generation of VR & AR experiences. They believe that volumetric video will shape the way we communicate and express ourselves in the future.

In his talk "Volumetric Video and the Future of Digital Communications", Rafa will talk about how Augmented Reality and Virtial Reality are re-defining the way we interact with digital media and the world around us. Rafa will talk about the applications of this new technology in different fields and he will present some of the work they have been working on during the last few months.

  1. Julie Connelly, Project Manager at the ADAPT Centre @ Trinity College Dublin

The ADAPT Centre is supported by the Irish Government through Science Foundation Ireland with a remit to deliver ground-breaking innovations in digital content which can be leveraged by partners in industry. Since joining ADAPT in 2016, Julie has managed collaborative research projects with ADAPT's industry partners across multiple domains including personalisation, e-health, natural language processing and multi-model interaction.

In this talk, Julie will discuss a collaboration with Eir in which deep learning components have been trained to identify telecoms infrastructure in Google Streetview imagery. The emerging technology from this work is currently being investigated for commercial feasibility.

  1. Susan Sweeney, Lecturer at Dublin Business School

Susan is a highly experienced leader, instructional designer and virtual reality pioneer with a background in proven facilities management, social media production, video production and teaching. As a lecturer at DBS, her aim is to inspire others via experimental active learning methodologies in animation, virtual reality, media production and digital media.

Susan will discuss two case studies carried out with her students at DBS. The first case study uses a constructivist and social constructivist approach to introduce a visual literacy element to a business curriculum. Case study two, #cyborgart examines the affordances arts students gained by learning how to incorporate simple, cheap but effective sensors in their art.
