Node.js Showcase

Details

Event Description

Node.js is a cutting edge technology that’s changing the way real-time web apps are developed. Although not completely new, this is something that many UK developers are not familiar with, which is why we would like to give you all the opportunity to explore this further with some free beers and pizza at our next Meetup event; the Node.js Showcase and discuss if Node.js is really the new Ruby on Rails.

What is the format of the event?

Beginner and ‘hardcore’ Node.js developers will come together to discuss and showcase Node.js related projects (including R&D) with a panel of experts that will demo some Node.js examples. After the event we will move to a local pub giving you the opportunity to network over more beers.

Our Panel of Experts include:

Kornel Lesinski (@pornelski (https://twitter.com/pornelski)) Tech Architect at anobii.com Kornel, well known in the developer community produced 'Lightsaber Centralhack.' It was a hack written for the Autumn Hackathon in London. It is a showcase of W3C Device Orientation API, WebSockets and neutral networks on node.js. He will be demonstrating this at the event.

Marek Majkowski (@majek04 (https://twitter.com/majek04))
Marek is a developer working on RabbitMQ, a part of VMware. He will be presenting the SockJS project - an emulation layer that provides WebSocket-like API for browsers even when the native implementation is unavailable.

Jonah Fox (@weepy (https://twitter.com/weepy))
Jonah is a tech entrepreneur with a particular interest in collaborative creativity. He will be talking about brequire - a CommonJS environment for the browser (in less than 200 lines).

Rob Tweed (@rtweed (https://twitter.com/rtweed))
Rob is an IT Consultant and web framework developer with primary expertise in Javascript & Global-based databases. He will be talking about development of Javascript/Node.js front-ends for Global Storage databases (GT.M, Cache, Globals DB) which are heavily used in healthcare systems throughout the world.

Mike Cronnelly (@clock (https://twitter.com/clock))
Mike is a Head of Technical Service at Top 100, award-winning digital agency Clock Ltd. He will be talking about experiences developing and hosting two large node.js websites for News International: SunPerks and EatOut.

John Hamelink (@john_hamelink (https://twitter.com/john_hamelink)) & Gareth Drew (@frogstew (https://twitter.com/frogstew)) John & Gareth are developers at leading Digital Agency Cyber-Duck and have been experimenting with node.js. They will be showcasing an application taking offices by storm called Coffee Lottery. It allows employees to make drinks orders and once the orders are in, an employee is selected at random to make the entire order. They have incorporated node.js into this and will be demonstrating it live at the event.
