What we're about

Beginning and experienced singers alike will find a place to spread their vocal wings in The Freedom Choir. Liberate your voice and revel in the age-old tradition of singing together. Led by Elizabeth Melvin, The Freedom Choir sings a soulful and uplifting repertoire from around the corner and around the globe. Using the time-honored method of call and response to learn new songs, you will be thrilled at how quickly you will be singing with others in 4-part harmonies.

-No Audition, No Experience Required!

-Learn songs in the oral tradition, line by line in call and response.

-Sheet music and lyrics occasionally provided, but you need not read music.

-Explore vocal music and harmonies from South Africa, African-American Gospel, Appalachian folk, Americana, new singer-songwriters and much more!

-Relaxing warm-up at the beginning of every night gets you ready to sing.

-Get your rhythm on with occasional body percussion and dance moves to accompany songs.

-A fun, convivial atmosphere! We laugh a lot!

-We are not affiliated with any religion, creed or political belief.

-Choose from two locations, two days weekly (Wednesdays, 11 am-12:20pm, Annapolis; Thursdays, 7:30-9pm, Severna Park)

-Register and pay online or at the door, pay in full or in installments or buy a 15-week drop-in card - good for one year.

Outdoor Singing! TIME CHANGE THIS SUNDAY!

Annapolis Maritime Museum - Park Campus

Enjoy an hour of singing next to a tranquil creek in Annapolis. Led by Freedom Choir director Elizabeth Melvin, we sing a variety of easy chants, rounds, layer and harmony songs. All voices are welcome, this is NOT a choir -- although sometimes we end up sounding pretty great! We have fun, move, laugh, sing..... and create a safe, relaxed environment for everyone. Singing together is a healing gift in these extraordinary times. You are guaranteed to leave with a song in your heart and a smile on your face.

There is enough space so that we can stand safely apart from each other. We ask that you be vaccinated and if not, please wear a mask. Singers masks, designed to optimize the experience of singing while masked, may be available if requested in advance.

NOTE: This event is not sponsored by the Maritime Museum. Admission is by donation $10-$20 that you drop in the leader's collection basket on site.
