Sunset Wetlands Walk
Let's walk the beautiful Bolsa Chica Wetlands and enjoy the sunset! This easy walk will take us on paths through the mostly flat wetlands, where countless of water fowl make their home or stop to rest and feed before traveling again on their migratory path. Bordered on one side by Pacific Coast Highway and oil fields and houses on the other, Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve wetlands is a 300 acre coastal sanctuary for wildlife and migratory birds. There's a wooden bridge crossing over a tidal inlet and a 3.5 mile loop trail providing spectacular wildlife viewing. We will walk at a moderate pace, not a power walk, but not a stroll, either. Wear walking shoes (tennis shoes OK). You might want to bring a water bottle and a jacket in case it is chilly. We will be walking a total distance of 3.5 miles (1 hour). We will return to our vehicles as the sun is setting over the ocean. DIRECTIONS: Meet in the paved parking lot of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, located on Pacific Coast Highway halfway between Warner and Seapoint, across the street from Bolsa Chica State Beach. It is located at the only signal between Warner and Seapoint. (We will not be meeting at the nature center parking lot on Warner near PCH.) If you are driving north on PCH, after passing Seapoint, turn right in the parking lot at the next signal. If you are driving south on PCH, after passing Warner, turn right at the next signal into the entrance to Bolsa Chica State Beach. Make an immediately u-turn in the entrance-way to the state park. Turn left onto PCH with a green light, and make an immediate right turn into the parking lot of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. PARKING: Park where you can find a space in the parking lot. Meet by the large descriptive signs at the end of the parking lot. Please arrive 10 minutes early; we will be departing at 4.00 0 pm sharp.

What we're about

Get off the couch and get moving! Meet other people like yourself who are just now getting out there to exercise. Meet local friends and help one another stay motivated! Join us in walking at the park or wetlands, easy cycling along the shore, short hikes in the hills, or playful kayaking in the harbor. Perhaps you'll even find a workout/gym partner!

This group is for people new to exercising or just getting back to exercise after a lapse. We may not have rock-hard bodies, but we do have lots of fun. The outdoor activities are at a not-too-difficult level. No one gets left behind.

The secret to health and fitness is getting light exercise *consistently*, that is, about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise, about 5 times a week. The exercise doesn't have to be strenuous. In fact, you should simple raise your heartbeat only slightly, and should still be able to converse while exercising. You can accomplish by walking briskly, or cycling steadily. We don't race; we don't run marathons, and we don't compete with one another. The object is to get fit while having FUN!

Our walks are usually about one hour to one hour and 30 minutes in duration. We walk at a steady pace, not a stroll, but not racing, either. The hikes are in Orange County's wilderness parks, and last about 2 to 3 hours. Bike rides cover a distance of 10 to 25 miles. Each person pedals at their own pace, and chooses the distance he or she wants to go. There are usually two groups of riders: a slower group doing a shorter distance, and a faster group doing a longer distance.

Sometimes we simply engage in some sort of outdoor activity that may not be that much exercise, but is fun nevertheless. Activities include horseback riding, attending outdoor festivals, or simply exploring a different neighborhood. If you have a suggestion, please share it. And don't forget to bring your camera. We love it when members post photos of our events in the group's photo album!
