Tobogganing at Pokagon!
Let's go tobogganing! Wait, what's tobogganing? (http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/4699.htm) Oh, you my friend are in for a treat! https://youtu.be/UB15L74L8mc These are twin, 1/4 mile long, refrigerated tracks! They run whether it's snowing or not. (http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/4699.htm) The place gets packed, so we need to arrive early. Meet at the WalMart (8300 E 96th St, Fishers) to car pool. The car pool leaves promptly at 8:00AM! It takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes to drive there. If you are carpooling, you will need to contribute money for gas. In a car with 4 people, this might be $20 or more per person. The round trip is about 340 miles. You will also need to share the split cost of a toboggan. 4 people sharing a toboggan for 2 hours will be about $9 per person. The toboggan run is cash only. If you opt to meet us at Pokagon, you only need to split the cost of a toboggan (about $9 per person). Meet at the Toboggan Warming Center (450 Lane 100 Lake James, Angola, IN) before 10:30AM. We will eat lunch at the Potowatomi Inn (http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/inns/potawatomi/) after tobogganing. If everyone wants to hike Pokagon or check out Trine SRA (http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2973.htm) we can do that after lunch. To be honest, after two hours of tobogganing, most people are worn out! Bring the following: Hat, Scarf, Sunglasses (especially if there is rain or snow), warm clothes and boots. I usually wear insulated overalls over my clothes. Ski pants or a snow suit will work too. Of course, if it is an abnormally warm day, dress may be a little lighter. Make sure these are clothes that can get a little dirty. Money for lunch or snacks at the warming station, gas, and toboggan rental. Water and a snack A Positive Attitude! The sleds have to be carried back up the hill after each run. Four people carry one sled, so it is fairly easy. The walk is approximately 1/4 mile and involves stairs. Please consider your fitness level before committing to this event.
