What we're about

A very warm welcome to the Map Reading Meetup group (Midlands).

There are three related groups:
The Map Reading and Navigation Group - Midlands, North and South.

You may join any of the events from any of the groups by either joining the Meetup Group or via our main website www.mapreading.co.uk (http://www.mapreading.co.uk/)

As the title says we’re all about Map reading and navigation, we run officially certified 2 day (Sat and Sun) map reading courses throughout England, plus an occasional longer event such as the Hadrian’s Wall walk.

Please see the events calendar for our up and coming Meetups. We regularly add new dates and locations so if there isn’t a course you can get to at the moment, please check back – or contact us to discuss a course just for your group.

Who joins our courses?
Basically anyone who enjoys being out and about in the glorious English countryside. These courses are ideal if you go walking alone, with family and friends, you lead group walks or teach map reading to other Meetup groups.

Do I need any experience or equipment?
No experience is required as the progression, from novice to confident intermediate, is taken in simple, clear steps in a relaxed, informative and safe environment. Our map reading courses are an ideal introduction to navigation. Those who have some map reading / navigation experience in navigation will also benefit greatly. During your time with us you will be able to revisit the basics, in the company of a fully qualified mountaineering instructor, before moving on to learn / practice more advanced techniques.

We will supply you with a high quality compass and any maps needed, so you just need to turn up in your normal outdoor gear (waterproofs, rucksack, etc.) and off you go.

Do I get a certificate?
Yes. On successfully completing the course you’ll receive an official NNAS Bronze (National Navigation Award Scheme) which give credit points for the SCQF L4 - equivalent to the NVQ L1.

Who leads the Meetup?
Whilst we do appreciate that, in a few cases, there may be some unqualified people who are able to teach very basic navigation skills, we feel it's better to only use fully qualified instructors. We hope you agree.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Thanks for reading

Intermediate Map Reading and Navigation weekend - North Yorkshire

Over the we will be heading up to Malham in North Yorkshire. Why Malham? 300ft high cliffs, deep valleys, gorges with 200ft rock walls, rolling hills, lakes and an abundance of other map features all add up to making the Malham area of North Yorkshire the best easily accessible navigation training area in England. Over the weekend you will learn various methods of safely navigating around difficult terrain in the company of a “fully qualified” instructor, whilst gaining valuable experience in contour interpretation and advanced compass techniques. You will also be introduced to a number of relocation techniques for those (hopefully brief) moments when you’re not quite sure of your location. (Optional) For a few hours on Saturday evening we will be out learning and practicing night navigation. You don't need to participate in this activity, but this really may come in useful one day !! Cost £130 per person Includes: All training with “fully qualified and insured” instructor Equipment – maps/compass etc. NNAS (Silver) assessment and all associated fees Maximum participants = 6 Do you need accommodation? There are many, many inexpensive local hotels in the area – e.g. (at the time of writing) the Skipton Travel Lodge is £35 per night for a single or twin room If you would like more details of this event you can find these here http://mapreading.co.uk/advanced.aspx
