Rancocas Nature Center Meet-up

We changed the date as to not compete with the Super Bowl. Join Linda Shockley, president of the Lawnside Historical Society, as she shares the history of Lawnside, New Jersey—the state’s only incorporated African American municipality. The mission of the Historical Society is to promote and preserve the heritage of Lawnside, including its Peter Mott House. As the oldest dwelling in the borough, it was built around 1845 and was the home of Reverend Peter Mott, a “stationmaster” on the Underground Railroad. The former residence now serves as an Underground Railroad museum. The presentation includes details from several research projects and the borough’s development from a 19th century settlement by free born, manumitted, and self-liberated peoples, to the present, as its 100th anniversary of incorporation approaches. Studies show that taking a walk in a natural area is good for your physical and mental health. Adults and interested teens can join Rancocas Nature Center for a Saturday guided hike in the preserve. The program is free. A Rancocas Nature Center membership or a donation is suggested. Inclement weather cancels.

What a tasty way to spend a winter afternoon! Bring the whole family and enjoy a program about maple sugaring, the oldest continuous industry in North America. On this self-guided hike, you’ll visit multiple interactive stations along the Rancocas trails. Learn about the Sugar Maple tree and the history of maple sugaring, observe a tapping demonstration, and enjoy a maple syrup tasting. To ward off the chills, we’ll have an old-fashioned campfire burning. Cost: Rancocas Nature Center members, $9/person, $30/family (limit 5); nonmembers, $11/person, $40/family (limit 5).
