Subject: [roofdeck] NYC Garden
rooftop info: Please read the entire email
Hi All,
This is Leslie
Adatto, organizer of the NY Rooftop Garden Meetup group. I am excited to say
that our group has over 325 people and new people are joining everyday. Josh
Buksbaum – my fabulous co-organizer (Josh is helping out to give Jim Freeman
some family time, Laura Yip has moved to California)
and I have lots of events planned and information to share about gardening and
NYC rooftop events. My hope in organizing the group is to make people aware of
rooftop activities and learn from the collective intelligence of the group. I
believe that as more people contribute and share with the group, the more
cohesive it will become. There are a lot of smart people in the group with
hands-on gardening experience, and I personally would like to learn more about
gardening from some of the experts out there. Don’t be shy – I know there are
some garden designers, architects and other thought leaders in the group. One
of the best ways to have a successful meetup is when people can have fun and learn
something new. We’ve had members host discussions on composting and a great
walking tour of the High Line where we learned about the public art and plant
selection. The seed exchange in March inspired many people to start gardening
early. I would like to ask for the group’s help in two ways: 1. Part of what
makes this group great is all the smart people with a like-minded interest in
gardening. We would LOVE to meet more of you and perhaps hear what you have to
say on your topic of expertise. If you are an expert in any subject – we would
like to hear from you – don’t be shy. Its a nice way to kick off a meetup event
if someone speaks for 10-15 minutes about their chosen profession or expertise.
Vertical Farming, Garden design, proper soil mixture, problems and solutions to
rooftop gardening on hot roofs – all could be informal discussions. Please
think about what you would like to learn more about or what you can speak
about. 2. The Meetup group is free to all members, but there is a small charge
as an organizer to run the group using the Meetup platform. The cost per year
is $144, which I pay out of pocket. This works out to less than 50 cents per
group member. Would the group be open to donating to defray the expense of
running the group? If so, donations would be strictly voluntary and anonymous.
I was thinking of leaving a donation jar at future meetups, and even if people
wanted to contribute loose change, it would defray my cost. In the interest of
transparency, any extra money’s collected would be used for future meetup events.
Thanks for your time and consideration. I hope to meet more of you at future
events. And remember – we’d love to hear from more of the thought leaders in
the group.
