September Meetup / Book Swap - GRAPHIC NOVELS
Monday, August 2, 2010 6:38 PM
Many of you have already expressed a great deal of interest and excitement over September's themed meetup - GRAPHIC NOVELS. For those who don't already know it, there's a lot more to the genre than comic books and manga. In fact, there have been several critically-acclaimed biographies and works of fiction published in this medium. Graphic novels can be funny, embarrassing, thought-provoking or tragic; exactly what you'd want included in a book, but written into panels instead of paragraphs. My personal favorites from over the years include Watchmen, Maus, Tank Girl and Fables. They're beautifully fleshed-out stories with a great deal of heart and a more mature writing style/content than many of the standard books you could be reading.
I'd like to encourage all of you who've never picked up a "picture book" to RSVP next month and join our discussion.... I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find. Similarly, I want to encourage fans of the art form to help me compile a list of "suggested reading" for our fellow members. I've already received a few suggestions from various people, so let's keep them coming!
THERE WILL BE A BOOK SWAP MID-SEPTEMBER. For those wondering, you're not strictly limited to bringing contemporary fiction books. Please bring any graphic novels, biographies, textbooks, how-to guides, mad libs, poetry collections or anything else you're willing to trade, and be prepared to ~SELL THEM!~
