HERO (Human & Equal Rights Organizers) is an all-volunteer, grassroots group of community organizers and leaders with diverse backgrounds working towards HERO’s vision of a world with equality for all. HERO has created certified trainings, community programs and activities to help educate the community about LGBTQ equality.
Each summer a group of core Equality Walkers walks a mile for every year Arizona has been a state without full legal recognition of its LGBTQ citizens – and this July, Walkers will be walking 101 miles through the Arizona desert. Equality Walkers utilize these miles to speak to police, city managers, faith communities, elected officials and individuals in diverse communities and give a real face to LGBTQ Arizonans.
The Equality Walk is funded solely on personal donations, fundraisers and sponsorships from organizations. This campaign has not only survived hard economic times, but it has thrived in it. This is because this is a message people need to hear and increasingly, they want to engage in civilly.
HERO uses the idea of education through social movement, as our social change philosophy. Although our push is for a radical movement – equality for all Americans with a focus on the LGBTQ community – it is a peaceful one. We use nonviolent means in our community actions and the Equality Walk specifically uses the idea of pilgrimage to spread the word of equality.
