Something wonderful

Dear Replicant scum,
I've some excellent news to share with you which is not strictly speaking book club business I believe will be of interest to all UK SF readers and more importantly would not have been made possible without a great deal of help and support of a LARGE number of Science Fiction Book Club members.

On Saturday 17th June 2017 at the AGM of the British Science Fiction Association, by unanimous vote* of all present, I became the newest director of the BSFA and assumed the role of the Webmaster and join-organiser of the yet to-be-formed meetup group whose purpose will be to promote the BSFA's monthly events.

The basis of my pitch was a hugely upgraded BSFA.co.uk website, the test version of which can be found online at the following address, and I am inviting everyone to please have look and test it out. https://test.sciencefictionbookclub.org.

Anyone can login to test the site with the username and password of "test" but those feeling extra brave can test out the live membership system with their credit card. For testing purposes the amounts charges are much less than the usual BSFA membership rates and are charged at the following rates as displayed below. These membership subscription and charges will be cancelled and refunded on requested or within 14 days to allow people time to test the site at their leisure.

What does the new site do?

There's quite a list...

Membership Management and Renewal System
After 60 years BSFA members will finally be able to join, pay, renew, update, change or cancel their BSFA Membership and other personal details without having to bother BSFA officers with such mundane tasks. All major credit-cards are accepted and the payment gateway, Stripe, charges less than half the amount that PayPal does, 20p + 1.4%  vs 20p + 3.2%. It's the same payment gateway as nineworlds, so win!!

BSFA Award Nomination & Voting Forms
BSFA members will be able to nominate and vote on the BSFA Awards from within the BSFA Website and change their vote as many times as they like until the nominations or votes are called. They'll get an email confirming their nomination or vote!

BSFA information that's easy to find
A properly formatted site structure features individual pages About, People, Constitution , History and Site Credits.

Info on Events
The new site has easy to find Events page which provides all the information anyone would need to come along and enjoy the events the BSFA offers. As well as that there is now an Interview Archive page where all previous Author Interviews can be presented together and save people needing to go searching for them online. Long time BSFA member Chad Dixon has been recording and broadcasting BSFA events for the last few years via Twitter/Periscope and finally all his hard work can be presented and seen, together. Excellent work Chad!!

It's Safe, Secure and no more spam
This testing site is fully mobile friendly with HTTPS security throughout and features state of the art spam filters to ensure the new site will never again get so filled with spam as the current bsfa.co.uk was, which was infamous for over half of it 47,000 accounts being fake. If you wanted offers for polish garden patios and cheap viagra, that was the place to go.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
What happens next is pretty simple and luckily it's a process that has been done once before. Back in November 2015 Tom Hunter Director of the Arthur C. Clarke Award accepted my offer to renew the Clarke Award site and we transferred the old ClarkeAward.com site off of the exact same machine that houses the current BSFA.co.uk site. The person who made this all possible was a man called Del Lakin-Smith (website, twitter & Facebook) and he could not have been more helpful. Every email to him was answered speedily and fully and he allowed the whole process to proceed as smoothly as possible. He's a Microsoft Professional and anyone needing development or support of Microsoft products would be hard pushed to find someone better. With Del's help the whole process took an hour or so and very shortly afterwards the ClarkeAward.com site was back up and running on its new home, where it has gone from strength to strength. Del agreed to be my BackupBuddy for the new ClarkeAward.com site should anything happen to me and it is my hope he will agree to fulfil the same role with the new bsfa.co.uk site.

So it's my hope that the current bsfa.co.uk site (minus 23,000+ spam accounts) will reappear online within the next few days and we'll start the upgrade process soon after that.

If anyone has any questions what so ever please do feel free to get in touch.

Please return to what you were doing.
