What we're about

Do you like Stephen King? Have you never read him but want to start? We dig in to his novels, short stories, and even movies based on his writing. Among other things we look at his plotlines, narrative styles, story structure and characterizations of women, Black people, other people of color, children, and white men (SO many white men). Even if you haven't read the whole story, feel free to join us if you're all right with us discussing the ending.

Saturday Night at the Movies: Firestarter

The New 400 Theater

Let's have an in person movie night! This group hasn't read Firestarter yet, and the new movie is getting "meh" reviews, but let's still go.

The exact time we'll start is UNDECIDED because the 400 Theater doesn't have showtimes yet for Saturday 5/21, but I'll update as soon as possible.

Firestarter is the story of a girl named Charlie who was born to parents with paranormal powers, who were the subjects of a government study. The government, of course, wants to use Charlie's powers against its enemies, but her father will do anything to protect her from that.

At least that's how the novel goes. This could be bad or it could be good, but it should at least be interesting for King-ophiles. Anyway, it can't be worse than Overdrive.

Better Call Saul Throwdown (discussion of season 6)

Taking a break from King for a phenomenon I need to talk about. On Monday, May 23rd, the 7th episode of AMC's Better Call Saul airs, to be followed by a seven-week break in episode airings (seven weeks!).

LET'S DISCUSS. Seasons 1-5 are on Netflix. If you don’t have cable, you can see season 6 on the AMC app or buy the episodes a la carte on Amazon Prime (that’s what I’m doing).

Better Call Saul is the prequel to the series Breaking Bad [masked]), but it's a series that stands on its own. If you've never watched Breaking Bad, especially if the reason is that it sounds too violent, Better Call Saul might be more your speed.

Oh, screw the details. Sign up for this discussion if you know that after episode seven of Better Call Saul, you are going to need to TALK. I love this show and I will definitely need a debrief after ep 7.

Stephen King Book Club Brunch

m.henry

Hey, let's meet in person for brunch. This will be more a social event than a book discussion.

m. henry is an Andersonville breakfast place with good food and reasonable prices (compared to other Chicago neighborhoods). This book club was always supposed to be in person, so let's get some of that spirit back!

Stephen King Book Club: "The Body" from Different Seasons

Online event

We're taking it easy on the page-count for June with a novella from the 1982 quartet Different Seasons. It has a tie-in with It, so read carefully. And read slowly since the stand-alone paperback version of "The Body" is only 192 pages. (Different Seasons is available in its original four-novella format, or you can buy the stories individually. I'm buying the single book to get all of them.)

The movie Stand By Me was based on this story. A group of boys hears there's a dead body out by the train tracks, so they head out to take a look. You might recognize a character who shows up in a few King stories. He was played by Kiefer Sutherland in the movie.
