The Sussex Drum! Creating communities in rhythm. https://www.thesussexdrum.com

This group is ideal for - Anyone who wants a great introduction or a deeper dive into the world of rhythm (percussion and hand drumming). Anyone of any ability; a seasoned drummer or someone curious to explore rhythm for the first time. Anyone interested in learning world rhythms collected over 20 years from across the globe. Anyone interested in learning by doing, discovering new skills as they go. Anyone who wants to develop their musicality as a musician or novice. Anyone excited by rhythm as a communicator. Anyone longing to feel welcome and part of a group without having to engage with words. Anyone drawn to the transformative, empowering and liberating aspects of rhythm. Anyone interested in personal expression and community music. Anyone who has come to a class or event run by Jamie Morgan & wants more.

What to expect at an Immersive Rhythm Day (a long event)

In Short: A fun day diving into rhythm; harnessing its potency to transform and empower; Expect games, laughter, play and to take part in some really great music; We'll break with a shared lunch.

In Detail: This day will be an immersive dip into the world of rhythm, community music and personal expression.

With over 20 years passion and experience hand drumming as a professional, Jamie has played and learned alongside some of the foremost leaders and musicians in the field. This has fostered a deep knowledge that, irrespective of prior experience, taking part in rhythm has enormous power & potency to transform, empower and liberate all kinds of wonderful energy.

On this day we’ll dip as deeply as we can into this potential together.

Welcome - arriving in the space
Warm up - warming the hands, body & brain with simple rhythmic pattens
Foundations - learning rhythms, dropping into listening & playing!
Lunch - Yum (bring something to share)
Immersive Rhythm - We’ll set an intention, and then we’ll play the day out, raising our own energy to meet the natural ebb & flow of music as it happens
Closing - Optional verbal communication of thoughts, feelings, insights or appreciations to take away.

By sharing time & space in the rhythm, we take part in something profound and simple that’s existed all over the world for millennia, with our own totally unique stamp on it.

What to expect at Communities In Rhythm (weekly classes)

These are in many ways a condensed version of the Immersive Rhythm Days, with the added possibility of weekly participation in a drumming community.

In Short: A fun 2 hours diving into rhythm; harnessing its potency to transform and empower; Expect games, laughter, play and to take part in some really great music; We'll break for shared tea.

In Detail: Classes will be flavoured by world rhythms collected over 20 years from across the globe. Having studied percussion alongside some of the foremost leaders and musicians in the field, Jamie believes a great way to develop skill & musicality is to use basic rhythms as a foundation to try out new variations, whilst playing alongside others; learning through doing & discovering new techniques as you go.

Welcome - arriving in the space

Warmup - warming the hands, body & brain with simple rhythmic patterns

Foundations - learning rhythms, dropping into listening & playing!

Break - teas & coffees will be provided

Immersive Rhythm - We'll use rhythms & techniques we've learned this week to play together & try out our own variations, making things up if we like (nothing to get wrong or right), knowing we can always return to the simple pulse of the rhythm. Then we'll play the session out raising our own energy to meet that natural ebb & flow of music as it happens.

Closing - We'll have an optional chat. You can share how the class was, as well as anything new you might have learned or discovered (but again, only if you want to).

By turning up regularly to share time & space in the rhythm, we take part in something profound & simple that's existed all over the world for millennia, with our totally unique stamp on it.
