The Climate Crisis and Human Cognition
Details
Do you ever find it strange? We know there is a crisis situation knocking on our door, but this topic still doesn't quite feel like a proper thing to bring up in a social situation. On the one hand we are kind of bombarded with messages of doom and gloom, time running out. But then we encourage each other to fly off to those vacations (pre-covid) and congratulate on the new cars and bigger houses. No judgment here - but do you ever experience a sense of disconnect, the feeling that we are just somehow not switching gears?
This will be a discussion on the topic of climate crisis and human cognition. Are we wired to respond to this kind of threat? Slow moving and seemingly off in the distance. Do we too readily habituate to new hazards and add them to the category of normal for this existential situation? There is even a theory that whatever the protective mechanism that helps us live knowing about our mortality, might be at work in our struggle to really feel the reality of the impending climate crisis.
We will take this discussion in another direction too. How does becoming more aware of our blind spots help us cope with this challenge? If there are ways that our own brains are getting in our way how can we overcome this? My hope is that there is therapeutic and practical value to shedding light on and talking about this issue. Let's feel more whole and more awake so that we can simultaneously keep our sanity and tackle this big existential threat of our time. Looking forward to hearing your insights.
