Summer time, and the grilling is easy! Let’s start summer the right way, with an ocean view hike and beach barbecue (yeah, yeah, the solstice is on the 21st, but Trailblazers are always ahead of the pack).
The hike will take us along Mesa Peak Motorway from Corral Canyon, skipping the usual strenuous climb to the Motorway from Malibu Canyon Road (it’s summer- who needs the sweat?). We’ll roller coaster along open fire road on our way to about 1000’ of total elevation gain and loss, pass Little Moab (the giant sandstone sculpture garden), and go until we don’t feel like going anymore- then we’ll turn around and head back to the cars. 6 miles total? 8 miles? Whatever.
Once we reach the cars, we’ll cruise back down the mountain and hit the beach at Waverly’s house (she changed her name just to fit the theme of the hike) to grill some food and frolic in the surf. Burgers and dogs will be provided. Beach Blanket Blazers are to bring their favorite drink, and a side, salad, or desert to share. The grill will be full of the aforementioned burgers and dogs, so nothing that needs to be grilled, please.
Space is limited, so keep your RSVP current- flakes melt in the sun. If you only intend to attend the hike, please indicate that and I'll open a party spot for someone else.
Please note in your RSVP or the comment section what you’ll be bringing to share, so we can keep a running tally on the bags of Doritos- we don’t want too many Cool Ranch.
Bring your swimsuits if you’re so inclined- we’ll literally be on the beach. Thongs are optional for women, strictly forbidden for men.
Directions to the hike are below; directions to Waverly’s will be given out later to all party-goers. Allow extra time for the last leg to the hike, from PCH up Corral Canyon Rd- it takes 20 or so minutes to get from bottom to top due to the winding road.
Corral Canyon Rd. is off PCH, about halfway between Kanan Dume Rd. and Malibu Canyon/Las Virgenes Rd (at the 76 Station- same turn as Solstice Canyon, but stay on Corral Canyon). Turn up Corral Canyon Rd. off PCH, away from the ocean. Drive 5 miles, park in the dirt lot near the top. Corral Canyon is not a through road, so if you drive off a cliff, you've gone too far.
Note: the last 1/2 mile is a dirt road.
