• Community Outreach - Computers4Kids (4 Shooting Dates)
ABOUT COMPUTERS4KIDS: We believe that all youth should have the 21st-century technology skills necessary to be competitive in college and future careers. C4K's mission is to provide youth from low-income households in Charlottesville with supportive mentoring, a creative out-of-school learning environment, access to industry-level technology, project-based learning and youth leadership opportunities. WHY WE ARE SHOOTING: C4K is working on amplifying and increasing the stories they tell about their incredible youth members. In order to do so effectively, they need excellent photographs! They are developing a pool of local photographers who would be willing to donate their time to C4K in conducting a one or two-hour photo shoot at C4K, either as a one-off or once or twice a year. SHOOTING DATES: We will have 4 shooting dates, and need 2 photographers + myself for each date. The shoots are very short lasting only 90 minutes each. You only need to RSVP once, and then leave a comment in the comments section to pick which date you might want. • October 29 – 5:00 to 6:30 • October 30 – 5:00 to 6:30 • November 5 – 5:00 to 6:30 • November 6 – 5:00 to 6:30 SHOT LIST: Each photographer will be given a shot list (easy stuff), and the folks at Computer4Kids like these style of photos, so we’ll want to capture something similar (inspiration: http://drp.mk/QX6Sv4KgpN). I’ll be there for every shoot, and will assist other photographers. C4K’s mission is to empower youth (7-12th grade) from low-income families to be prepared with the 21st-century skills required to attend college, pursue meaningful careers, and ultimately, break the cycle of generational poverty. Helping out with some photography will mean a lot to this organization, and will do something wonderful for our community here in Charlottesville. I hope to see you there! Chris

  • Shoot Off 2018
About The Shoot Off: At 10 a.m. a subject will be announced to the CPI Members and Supporters who have RSVP'ed to this event via email and the event page. Supporters will have the deadline listed above to shoot, edit and upload up to 3 images from the assignment to a gallery hosted on our site. Any images submitted past the deadline will not be judged. The deadline for images is 12:00 MIDNIGHT the same day (14 hours to submit your photos) When uploading images, please upload full resolution full sized images (we have had gallery shows with the winners before and having full sized prints makes the printing process easier). Remember, this is a Shoot Off, not a submit off. All entries must be between 10:00am the day of the Shoot-off and the deadline of 12:00 MIDNIGHT. The previous month's 1st place winner will select the topic, and will also be the judge for the Shoot Off. That judge will select then choose the top three entries, and the process repeats itself. Winners will be announced in the Shoot Off Winners Archive (http://www.meetup.com/TheCPI/messages/boards/thread/25312292). This event will not require anyone to be present anywhere and entries can be submitted remotely. The contest topic will not be Charlottesville centric, so feel free to RSVP if you are planning on being out of town. If you are having any trouble submitting, please contact Chris ([masked]) prior to the deadline. There will be no extension on the contest deadline and all rules listed must be adhered to. This event is open to all CPI Members and Supporters (paid members). Have fun, and good luck!

  • Community Outreach: Splash for a Cure 5K Race and Pool Party
We've been supporting this event from its inception 10 years ago, and it has been a pleasure each year. We will be providing general PJ (photojournalistic) event coverage. The Ishan Gala foundation uses our photography as their main source of images in their year long effort to raise awareness, raise funds, and promote their cause. The event itself begins at 8:00 AM. I would like all members attending this event to arrive by 7:30 AM at the latest. This will allow us some time to become familiar with the grounds and put together a plan of action. • We’ll be covering the 5K race that starts at 8:00 – Group photo, some race photos, and finish line photos. • We’ll also be doing general event photography: Poll Race, Awards Speech, Raffle Drawing - etc. EVENT DESCRIPTION (FROM OUR HOSTS): The Ishan Gala Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit with a mission to be present in the lives of children fighting cancer and their families to improve their quality of life during and after treatment. We were founded by Mayank and Sejal Gala after the loss of their 2 year old son, Ishan, to neuroblastoma in 2009. During Ishan's fight, they experienced and witnessed what this disease does to the entire family...and knew they needed to do something about it. Only a few weeks after Ishan passed away, the Ishan Gala Foundation was formed and immediately began raising awareness and funds to support cutting edge research focused on finding less toxic treatments for neuroblastoma. Eventually, they also began the Hero Grants program to provide financial support to families all across the United States. Once the University of Virginia's Battle Building was complete, the foundation decided to shift its mission and focus on local families throughout Virginia. With the new Children's hospital came new treatments, research capabilities, and more families who would need help. Many of the families treated at UVA travel distances for their treatment and check-up because it is their best option, but that also means additional expenses such as gas, wear and tear on vehicles, lodging, meals, all while trying to keep up with bills and life at home. The Ishan Gala Foundation currently provides comfort and support to families who have been impacted by children's cancer through fun social events, care packages, regular check-ins, inpatient deliveries, financial support, and our holiday assistance program. Splash For A Cure 5K is an end of summer family friendly 5K walk/run followed by a pool party with games, crafts, food, and opportunities to score awesome prizes through a raffle or silent auction! Waterpark Party only tickets available too! Visit www.splashforacure.com (http://www.splashforacure.com/) for event details and to purchase tickets. RSVP: If you are unsure if you can make it to this event, please RSVP No. If you RSVP Yes, be sure to follow through with your reservation and arrive at the designated time and location. Please annotate any changes to your attendance as soon as possible through the event page. This is a fun event, and we hope to see you there! • Powered Up Portraiture!
WHAT: Get ready to improve your portrait skills - fast! You need training and experience - but how do you get it without a portfolio and supermodel connections? Come and learn the basics of how to work with models. Learn how to choose and use ambient, continuous and instantaneous light. This workshop will present the portrait shooting skills every photographer needs to improve their artistry. Professional photographer and Charlottesville Photography Initiative (CPI) Director, Christian DeBaun, will lead this workshop with both tutorials and practical work. Demonstrating a team approach, he will discuss makeup/styling and model prep, review lighting options and explore posing and composition before guiding participants through an actual shoot with models, using both studio and natural lighting, with and without modifiers, such as reflectors. LOCATION: Pleasant Grove Park in Fluvanna county (near Lake Monticello – 30 minutes from Charlottesville) provides a variety of natural settings for us, with ample room, parking, and a variety of backgrounds. Trail heads, meadows, pole barn, (where we will set up strobes) along with a 28-foot Recreational Vehicle (RV). The RV will accommodate the needs and privacy required for models to prep and change, while providing an exterior big screen monitor, under an awning, to view and critique images. RECREATIONAL VEHICLE (TRAILER): 28 foot trailer, self-contained and very comfortable. There is seating for eight, fridge/kitchen and a bathroom. There is enough room at the dinette for three models to apply makeup at the same time, while four other people relax in recliners and a sofa. There's a TV inside and a TV/monitor can also be mounted outside for photo viewing. An awning provides shade, which would also allow for a trailer-side background for studio-style work. MODELS: We will do a “casting call” for models (various ages, couples, and singles), so that we have a wide range of demographics and faces. In all cases this will be a TF (“trade for”) as we compensate our models with decent headshots for their time. We may ask you for help with obtaining models. In some cases, we may have a professional model that will be paid with your RSVP fee. NOTES: • This Meetup requires a $75 RSVP to cover the cost of models, help maintain the CPI website, and tow, fuel/water and support the RV & photo gear. Refunds will be given for inclement weather, but will not be available for “no shows,” or cancellations within 48 hrs of the shoot. • This is a “weather dependent” shoot. In the event of inclement weather, a rain date will be announced. • Lunch will be provided around 1:00 PM (most probably pizza). We can grill food if desired. The shoot will end with beverages (for staff - BYOB) and discussion of the day’s shoot. • This course has been offered twice at the CPI, and has always sold out. First come first serve. Please feel free to use the comments section below to ask questions, or make suggestions. Respectfully, Christian DeBaun CPI Director The Charlottesville Photography Initiative[masked]
