These Sunday meetings are mainly a social event. First-timers are welcome to come and hang out with the long time members and check out the space. There is no agenda: freestyle science-ing!

Want to talk to members about the projects they are working on? Want to check out the scientific resources we have available? Want to chat with interesting people? Join us for a few hours this Sunday.

Join us for a special lecture at 2:30.

Bio design + art: materials and pigments

From research to creation, bio design + art is the method of design innovation that is inspired by the processes and functions of nature. Ilaria Mazzoleni will introduce IM Studio recent work on sustainable architecture and bio inspired designs, as well as projects created in collaboration with scientists including Shauna Price and Lola Dompe’. Lola, who is a current member at TheLab, will present her ongoing observations and research conducted this year. Followed by discussion and audience participation to further explore the interrelationships between the natural and built environment, and other bio design + art related topics.

Ilaria Mazzoleni, Architetto, LEED AP is the founder of IM Studio Milano/Los Angeles (http://imstudio.us/). Her conceptual work has been published internationally, and her built work can be found in Italy, California, and Ghana. Since 2005 she has been a faculty member at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles. Her professional and academic investigation relates to sustainable architecture at all scales of design with a research focus on biomimicry, where innovation in architecture and design is inspired by the processes and functions of nature. In 2015 Ilaria founded Nature, Art, & Habitat, a multidisciplinary residency summer program in Val Taleggio, BG, Italy. Her book, written in collaboration with evolutionary biologist Shauna Price, entitled Architecture Follows Nature – Biomimetic Principles for Innovative Design has been published by CRC Press (https://www.crcpress.com/Architecture-Follows-Nature-Biomimetic-Principles-for-Innovative-Design/Mazzoleni/9781466506077).

Lola Dompe´ is a biologist and member of TheLab and IM Studio. Current experiments include exploring the biocellulose generating qualities of G. Xylinus, observing the structural affects of humidity on Bacilli spores, finding applications for pigmented bacteria and developing mycelium as a design/consumer material.
