A spiritual life is deeply incarnational. We are spirit in dust. We are a Word made flesh. How can we possibly imagine a life of one without the other? Nevertheless, we regularly encounter a lingering, seductive promise that once we become spiritual enough, we may thoroughly transcend our human interdependence with all these sloppy, unpleasant aspects of this solid flesh. Challenged by our differences, we can lose sight of our commonalities with the planetary family, yet we undeniably belong to one another. We are fiercely interdependent, and rely upon one another in ways we cannot possibly comprehend. The greatest challenge, and the clearest litmus test, for any spiritual movement or community is the degree to which its actions are congruent with its beliefs. How well do we enthusiastically embrace these inter-responsibilities we share with the entire family of creation? And - what can we do, in this moment to align our wisdom with our actions, as we move through the sometimes distressing, difficult worlds emerging daily all around us?
