Let's Read Philosophy... Fiction text: 1984 by George Orwell

The Examined Life, "Let's Read Philosophy..." session is an open discussion reading group held regularly (about once month) concerning a single work of philosophy. This session will be a bit different, since 1984 by George Orwell is not a philosophical text in the strict traditional sense, but fiction. However, I believe interesting points can still be drawn from this text. For each session, members read a piece of philosophy. The main request is to learn the key points from the text (which will form the basis of the discussion), with optional extra background material/depth. This session: 1984 by George Orwell (Fictional text) The format for this meetup will be as follows: - Starting promptly at 5pm, 1 hour of free flow discussion. - Then at 6pm, we'll have 4-5 minutes (duration will depend on attendee numbers) each of individual uninterrupted optional input. - If we have time remaining, we'll return to free flow discussion, until 7pm. - After that I booked 2 tables in the main pub space area, so those wishing to continue the discussion can do so there (since we only have the side room until 7pm). If you haven't read the The Examined Life rules, which can be found here, please do so before the meetup: https://www.meetup.com/The_Examined_Life/messages/boards/ The Marlborough Arms pub serves food and drinks. More information can be found here: https://www.greeneking-pubs.co.uk/pubs/greater-london/marlborough-arms/ The bar is open before and after the session. NB. Please RSVP if you can commit to attending and change your RSVP if something comes up. Inaccurate RSVPs can make it difficult to plan for room sizes and bookings.

Let's Discuss... No Specific Topic: Casual Social Meetup

** This meetup will be a little different. Instead of the usual format this meetup will be casual, no set topic. Instead we'll be getting to know each other more, including what perspective we're coming from, specific philosophical interests we have and other (non-philosophical) interests too. We can socialise in smaller groups or as one big group if we like, casual, with no set topic or expectation to even stick to philosophy. If you wish to come and just listen that is also fine. ** I should note that I don't know how the weather will be on the day, so I suggest people check the forecast beforehand. Hopefully it will be nice and sunny but the weather can be inconsistent. NB. Please RSVP if you can commit to attending and change your RSVP if something comes up. Inaccurate RSVPs can make it difficult to plan.

The Hill of Sisyphus

12 Jays St

the title of the meetup is an attempt at analagous links to the myth of sisyphus, the rolling of stones up hills, and them falling back to where they may, and then we roll them up the hill again, inviting metaphors relating to awake being and dreaming being and describing being using process philosophical theories about our basic state of being to share amongst us in this session.
