“The Cloud Upon the Sanctuary” with Stephen Amsden
Karl von Eckhartshausen (1752-1803) is an 18th century German mystic who wrote extensively on esoteric topics. This work, "The Cloud Upon the Sanctuary," reveals theocratic principles of western mysticism veiled in hermetic code. Eckhartshausen was briefly a member of the Bavarian Illuminati, but left for spiritual reasons. In this book of letters, he cryptically mentions a "society of the Elect" which has existed from the very beginning of time, "the invisible celestial Church." He predicted that "it is the society whose members form a theocratic republic, which one day will be the Regent Mother of the whole World." This manuscript influenced the works of his contemporary Louis Claude de Saint-Martin and the later emergence of the Traditional Martinist Order, and figured prominently again with the original Golden Dawn initiates.
APART from "The Cloud upon the Sanctuary," Eckartshausen was known to the mystic Transcendentalists of England during the 18th century for his knowledge of mysticism, magic and alchemy. He wrote much during this period, and exercised some considerable influence; but his other works are practically unknown among us. "The Cloud Upon the Sanctuary" has always remained in the memory of a few, and is destined still to survive, for it carries with it a message of deep significance to all those who look beneath the body of religious doctrine for the one principle of life which energizes the whole. As important today as ever before, the heart of his timeless message is now our responsibility, and our turn to carry the torch forward.
