What we're about

Think & Drink is a great way for people to get together and have deep, meaningful and thought-provoking conversations in ways you cannot have anywhere else. The topics can range from philosophical, to religious, to political, to scientific, to pretty much anything else. This is a very casual, open-discussion group that is welcome for all to join. This is not meant to be a sit & listen group. While you're welcome to stay on the sidelines, we want to welcome as many opportunities as possible for you to be involved in the conversation.

The most important topics are the ones that tend to be too controversial to discuss with friends, family & coworkers. But these topics are the most important to discuss, so that's what this group is all about. We welcome a diversity of views, backgrounds and opinions so we can have productive discussions without becoming an echo-chamber.

We encourage diversity of views and healthy, friendly debate, but most importantly we encourage tolerance of others views. We learn the most from those we disagree with most.

As soon as we can meet in person again, we generally meet at cafes during the day, and bars in the evening. But for now all of our meetups are held online. Online discussions will range from specific topics that I may post, and also free-for-all events with no topic, just come and discuss what's on your mind!

We look forward to meeting you and hearing from you.

Online Think & Drink - OPEN TOPIC!

Online event

What's on your mind? What's your reaction to the news for the week? Any recent epiphanies lately? Have any of your views been recently challenged? This is an open topic, open discussion about virtually anything you like. Philosophy, Politics, Religion, Controversial, Trending... Anything and everything! We welcome all views and opinions; the only requirement is tolerance of other people's views. This will be a weekly recurring event. I might not be able to attend this or I may only drop in for a few minutes at a time. There have been requests to do these events more often but my schedule is limited, and there are also times when I am on a philosophy kick but do not have anything scheduled! Having this recurring event will give everyone the opportunity to join & chat more often, and will satisfy my spontaneous jonesing for a meaningful chat with good unlike-minded folks. Hope you can make it! (The virtual room is setup so everyone in the group should be able to self-moderate in case I cannot join. If anyone is sabotaging or causing disruption in the group please message me directly and I will address.)

*IN PERSON* Think & Drink - "Do We Have Free Will?"

China City

We’ve gotta do at least one in-person meetup this year. We will meet at China City in Mill Creek which has no vaccine requirements. We’re gonna kick it off with my all time favorite philosophical topic: “Do We Have Free Will?”

The concept of Free Will is my favorite philosophical topic because I feel it is also the most important question to address that underlines most key theological and political ideologies. Do we have control over our actions, or are we mere cogs in a materialistic, cause & effect universe that determines all motion, including our thoughts and our choices?

I have always believed in Free Will and still do today, but an interesting thought experiment has challenged me a bit, and that is the idea of the Butterfly Effect. Imagine traveling back in time, say 10 years into the past, but you cannot communicate or interact with anyone. You as a time traveler are unable to change anything that is occurring in the past. They say one little change could spin off into a whole series of changes, but this is still a first-cause argument. Would everyone make the exact same choices if there were no changes? If so, this would be a case for Determinism. If changes only from outside forces such as a time traveler can alter one’s decisions, then this would indicate that peoples decisions are based on a cause & effect universe.

I’ve always believed in Free Will because essentially every aspect of humanity requires free will to exist, or at least the illusion of it. Choice, Preference, Responsibility, Morality, Justice, Love, Purpose, Rational Thinking, and many others; none of these are real if Free Will is not real. Without thinking too critically about it, we assume Free Will to be real in our day to day lives. But when we think critically and consider how the rest of the observable universe operates, we lose touch and start viewing all things including people as deterministic.

What are your thoughts? Come join us for some drinks and good conversation!

This is an open-topic, informal discussion group for anyone with anything interesting on their mind. Politics, Philosophy, Religion, Questions you can't wrap your head around... And anything else. There will always be a suggested topic to lean on, but we welcome you to share your thoughts and views on any subject. The conversation will go wherever it goes, and if there are enough people it could even split into multiple conversations. And don't feel obligated to sit in one spot the whole time; feel free to move around and mingle with others.

We encourage diversity and controversy, but above all things we encourage tolerance. We truly learn the most from those we disagree with most. So if you enjoy deep intellectual conversations with a group of awesome people, come pull up a chair, have a drink with us and share your thoughts! Think & Drink is guaranteed to always provide an excellent thought-provoking experience.
