What we're about

The aim of the By ThoughtWorks tech talks is to share our thinking about emerging technical trends, and – as always – inspire debate and conversation. You’ll find an open, comfortable environment for technologists to meet and discuss recent developments in the tech world, projects that both inspire and challenge, and how to stay on top of the ever-shifting tech landscape. We’ll feature both ThoughtWorkers and friends in this ongoing series. All are welcome and food will be provided.

We're a software consultancy and community of passionate, purpose-led individuals. We think disruptively to deliver technology to address our clients' toughest challenges, all while seeking to revolutionise the IT industry and create positive social change.

Jungle or Zoo? Managing the landscape of highly scaled work in the 2020s

Tuesday, 21 June 2022 | 5:30pm arrival for a 6pm start (AEST) 1 hour inc 15 min Q&A.

After two long years of bringing the By Thoughtworks series to you online, we are excited to be welcoming you back in our Thoughtworks offices across Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Mingle, learn, and hang out with those wanting to keep up with the latest in technology. It’s our shout, so please join us for a fun and casual session over drinks and nibbles with networking to follow. We hope you will join us!

In the 20th century, work was a metaphorical zoo - a predictable outing where you were guaranteed to see all the animals in an orderly and predictable fashion. Fast forward to the 2020s, organisations find themselves in a digital business jungle, signed on to an expensive safari where chances are, they’ll not spot a single dangerous creature or exotic opportunity from the safety of their vehicle - while knowing for sure the hazards are still out there.

In the 100 years since F.W. Taylor, Henry Gantt and James McKinsey first conjured up scientific management, program control, 7 kinds of PMO boss, charts to weed out wastrels and the dark arts of budgeting, a great deal has changed. So, why are we still using their outdated, steam-driven management tools in today’s business landscape?

Learn how to manage 21st century work at scale with our speakers Prachi Tiwari and Nigel Dalton at our next By Thoughtworks tech talk coming to you live and in-person. Please arrive by 5.30pm for a 6pm start.

This talk is great for:

  • Managers and executive - decision-making amidst complexity
  • Team leaders, understanding dependencies and blockers
  • Team members, aligning your work to purpose and a sense of progress

Prachi Tiwari, Lead Consultant , Thoughtworks
Prachi has worked in the product delivery space for over 15 years. She has worked across several industry verticals, leading successful delivery in complex environments, navigating chaos. She has worn various hats over the period of time from Business Analyst to Program Manager.

Nigel Dalton, Social Scientist, Thoughtworks
As a social scientist, Nigel equips organisations with the tools and thinking that can accelerate them to become a Modern Digital Business - seamlessly managing online to offline in a post-consumer, more human-centric world. Outside of work Nigel maintains a strong interest in the people who have not harvested the web’s benefits in the last two decades, through his work supporting the teams at charities like Orange Sky Laundry, and Australia’s Flying Robot School.

We look forward to seeing you there!
