GDPR: why tech businesses should be preparing now

With the GDPR introducing the greatest changes to data protection laws for a generation here are some questions to ponder in advance of the discussion:
· With online identifiers, location data and biometric data being formally defined as personal data, have you got full picture of all personal data processed by your company?
· Who do you share personal data with? Do you have a contract in place with them? The GDPR includes specific provisions that must be included in all contracts.
· Is the processing of personal data a core focus of your business? If it is you may need to appoint a data protection officer.
· Have you thought about employee or supplier data? Many businesses that are not consumer facing wrongly think that they do not need to worry about GDPR.
· The GDPR contains huge fines with the greater of up to 4% of worldwide group turnover or €20 million being the maximum fine. But were you aware that UK government published a Data Protection Bill this week which will implement and add to GDPR? This Bill includes introduces criminal offences and director liability for certain breaches.
