7:00 - 8:30 Meeting

Topic: Date and time APIs are notoriously difficult, even though we all have an intimate understanding of the problem domain. Why is it so hard to get right in an app, yet so easy to reason about? How could Apple screw up alarms around Daylight Savings Time more than once? In this talk, we’ll take a tour of the time and date APIs in Cocoa and Cocoa Touch, solve some common problems, and figure out why things aren’t always as easy as they seem to be.

Speaker: Jeff Kelley (https://twitter.com/slaunchaman)
Jeff Kelley is an iOS developer at Detroit Labs (http://www.detroitlabs.com/) and author of Learn Cocoa Touch for iOS (http://www.amazon.com/Learn-Cocoa-Touch-Jeff-Kelley-ebook/dp/B008JG3MCK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390934682&sr=8-1&keywords=learn+cocoa+touch+for+ios), published by Apress. He’s been working with iOS since its infancy in 2008, and managed the OS X environment at the University of Michigan before that. Apps he’s worked on that you’ve likely seen are the Domino’s Pizza iOS ordering app, the award-winning Chevy Game Time second-screen Super Bowl experience, and the DTE Energy outage center app. When not working on iOS apps, Jeff listens to an inordinate amount of podcasts and seeks out new and interesting races to run, recently completing his first half marathon.
