For more than four decades, composer and multi-instrumentalist Ross Daly has been recognized as one of the world’s foremost voices in modal music. From his base in Crete, Daly founded the original Labyrinth Musical Workshop, a global hub for the traditions of Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. Alongside longtime collaborator Kelly Thoma on lyra, Daly has inspired generations of musicians to carry these traditions forward while expanding them into bold, contemporary forms.

Toronto’s Labyrinth Ensemble is a testament to Daly’s vision. Over the past four years, this 13-member group has trained under international mentors, mastering new ways of hearing, performing, and improvising within modal traditions. Featuring instruments from santur to gayageum to lyra, the ensemble reflects Toronto’s unique cultural landscape and limitless possibilities for cross-cultural creation.

Now in their seventh intensive, the Labyrinth Ensemble joins Daly and Thoma in a program that honours tradition while showcasing the future of contemporary modal music.

“Simply, relentlessly, magnificent: a miracle of momentum and humanity,” (The Sunday Times) legendary violinist Kyung Wha is joined by long-time sonata partner Kevin Kenner on piano. They will perform works by Debussy, Schubert, Schoenberg, and Franck.

Born in South Korea, Kyung Wha Chung (age 77!!) is recognized throughout the world as one of the finest violinists of her generation. A prolific recording artist, her dazzling and probing artistry has made her a much-acclaimed performer throughout her 50-year career. Lauded for her passion, musicality, and the intense excitement that she brings to her performances, Chung’s uniquely expressive interpretations of the violin literature have established her as an artist of the very highest stature. She has received many prizes and honours, including the Medal of Civil Merit, the government of South Korea’s highest honour.

“Radiant playing, full of boldness … Kyung Wha Chung’s readings can stand alongside the best and most illustrious of her peers for sheer sensuality of playing. Refinement in its purest state.” (Diapason)

Pianist Kevin Kenner has been praised as "one of the finest American pianists to come along in years" by the Chicago Tribune. The Financial Times described him as a "player of grace, subtle variety and strength, with a mature grasp of dramatic structure and proportion," and the Washington Post has proclaimed him "an artist whose intellect, imagination and pianism speak powerfully and eloquently."

Dag Hammarskjöld, the Swedish diplomat who became Secretary-General of the United Nations, dedicated his life to peace and international cooperation. In this sweeping biographical drama, director Per Fly follows Hammarskjöld’s journey from his rise in international politics to his untimely death in a mysterious plane crash in 1961. Along the way, the film portrays the challenges he faced in balancing ideals with the harsh realities of Cold War geopolitics. Anchored by Mikael Persbrandt’s compelling performance in the title role, Hammarskjöld is a richly detailed portrait of a man whose vision for global peace remains strikingly relevant today.
