We are parents, tutors, educators, volunteers, and activists involved in helping students with severe reading deficits. We focus on helping older students with severe deficits, typically reading at grade-2 or less.

We don't believe in accommodations, and we think putting a struggling reader into an LD classroom is a tragedy. Reading is simply a set of skills that your child must practice until they are automatic and error-free.

This meetup is for parents. We will be talking bluntly about reading deficits, and what must be done to fix them and help a child catch up with his peers. You are welcome to bring your struggling reader along.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Starting in grade 3, poor readers are in deep trouble in every subject, no matter how smart they are. Your child was passed from grade to grade, perhaps even labelled with a learning disability. Perhaps he or she has assistance and accommodations to help survive school. But that isn't much of a preparation for life.

The research is clear: there is nothing wrong with your child. Almost every child becomes a strong, competent reader with proper instruction. But it gets harder with each passing year. Without help, your child will continue to fall behind in school and will develop self-defeating behaviors. By middle school, poor reading is a hair-on-fire emergency.

You must help your child learn to read, and we’ll show you how. It's not hard, but it IS time-consuming. You will have to teach your child blending, phonics, spelling, fluency, grammar, comprehension, and writing skills. And you will have to teach the meta-cognitive skills - mindset, optimism, resilience. We've done it, we'll show you how.

We will share our free tools, knowledge, understanding, and experience. And we will encourage and support each other. We are the Community Reading Project.
