Nov. 2nd-4th (Fri.-Sun.) Annual Backpack Seminar at Tyee Lodge: GPS Class and Sunday Membership hike from Barlow Pass to Frog Lake: 5.5 miles. We will start the seminar with a GPS class taught by Trisha Schultz on Friday at 10:00 AM till noon. Friday will be set up and slide show in PM of Montana section from Lima To Lemhi Pass. Pictures provided by Tom Ward. Please bring a GPS. The GPS class will be repeated on Saturday morning from 10:00 to noon. The classes should take around 30 to 60 minutes of indoor mapping and 30-60 minutes of practical outdoor work. Bring a compass and navigation using a compass bearing will also be covered. a Mapping will include how to read a map, how to read UTMs, and use of GPS. We will practice finding different coordinates relevant to our location. We will also be instructed on use of the GPS on Sunday for our membership hike.

Speakers for this year's seminar on Saturday include: Lisa Holmes author of "I Heart Oregon's Seven Wonders", and "I heart Oregon and Washington". She will have a new book coming out in the spring on nutrition and backpack gourmet food. Lisa will also do a pack breakdown. Whitney LaRuffa has just finished the Oregon Natural Desert Trail. He will do a presentation with great pictures from his trip. He will also do a pack breakdown and teach how to pack a backpack for comfort. Sylvia Ashley will be presenting a slide show on the John Muir Trail which her and a group of Trails Club members just completed including a climb of MT. Whitney. Six Moon Designs will again do a presentation on light weight packs, tents and accessories. We will not be doing too much on nutrition as we will have a food drying class in the spring at Tyee and hopefully invite Lisa Holmes to present her new book.

On Sunday we will leave the lodge around 8:30 and travel by car to Barlow Pass for a membership hike to Frog Lake. It is around 5.5 miles. Bring a day pack, lunch and water along with warm clothes and rain gear. To register go to Trails Club of Oregon Meetup site. Cost for Saturday and Sunday is $50.00. If you come Friday bring your own food and the cost will be lodging for Friday night. GPS class is free. Come and help us plan our hikes for the 2019 hiking season. Goal is one to two backpacks a month to include Class A through Class C hikes.
