Hike the Gabrielino Trail to El Prieto Canyon Along the Arroyo Seco Stream
Dear Transition To Green (T2G) Walkers and Hikers, In September, we discovered that a portion of Griffith Park that we've discovered and hiked along many times was impacted by fires earlier this year, and that, along with the multi-year drought still impacting much of the southwestern U.S., has left the trails leading up the the Observatory much more exposed than even a few years ago. Thus, let's return to the shadier, more verdant and "forgiving" environment of the Gabrielino Trail along the Arroyo for a beautiful early autumn walk/hike of about three miles round trip. We'll be gathering at the trailhead parking area at the corner of Windsor Ave and Ventura St at the eastern edge of the Arroyo Seco, providing an overlook of the south-facing San Gabriel Mountains, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the San Rafael Hills, and Verdugo Mountains. We'll proceed north on the fairly level Gabrielino until the we begin hearing the the refreshing sound of the Arroyo Seco Stream, and will walk among the green Alder trees hugging the stream. We'll traverse through the serene El Prieto Canyon, with plenty of mature Sycamores and Oaks, and will cross several bridges, a number of which have been renovated in recent years. Continuing to just below Teddy's Outpost will keep our hike moderate and accessible for those ages 8 years and older, with very mild elevation gain. This is a great hike for families and socialized doggies, and offers us a wonderful reprieve from the sights and sounds of the City Life! Details: • Hiking shoes with good treads are recommended, but the trail is mostly smooth. As for all T2G Hikes, please bring a large reusable water container with plenty of water upon arrival. Wear some SPF 30 sunscreen on your skin, especially if you're light-complexioned. You may want to smear some sunblock on your nose to prevent burning there. A hat or visor as always is recommended, too. Pack some nourishing snacks to enjoy, particularly at our halfway point or any spot where you need a boost of energy. • We will meet at the small trailhead on the north side of the small parking lot, which is just south of the corner of Windsor Ave and Ventura St in Altadena. • We'll gather between 10 a.m. and 10:15 a.m., and then hit the trail by 10:20 a.m., on Saturday, December 8th, 2018. • We'll allow approximately 2 and 1/2 hours for the hike. *Allow extra time to find parking in case the lot at the trailhead is full; street parking is available in the area. ***Transition To Green isn't liable for you on the Gabrielino Trail, the Arroyo Seco, or El Prieto Canyon. You are going at your own risk. *** Please keep your RSVP updated, and don't hesitate to contact Dr. Terence (Terry) Kubar at [masked] for more information, or if you are running late. Public Transit Options: While not directly next to a bus stop, this hike is only 0.6-mile away from Metro #267 Bus Line, with a stop at Lincoln and Ventura ( https://media.metro.net/documents/bbe13ae2-df05-4abd-8d09-0890c350861d.pdf ). Simply walk west on Ventura to the parking area/trailhead. Alternatively, take Metro #268 Bus Line, get off and Woodbury and Windsor, and walk north on Windsor for 0.7 mile (https://media.metro.net/documents/35657747-bdf2-4f89-86a6-c69b6d553400.pdf). Again, inquire if assistance is needed. Best Regards and See You on Saturday, ~The Transition To Green (T2G) Team

What we're about

The first party forum is Free! "Transition To Green" Community is all about learning at the local level how to make a transition to greener living. This is a grassroots, (non-partisan) public educational outreach that was founded in 2008 and became a 501(c)(3) in 2013. The concept of making a transition to green is something that all of us should be interested in learning more about, even if that means starting with baby steps. If you care about having cleaner air, water, energy efficiency, healthier food products and recycling, that's a good start. The dialog begins with you.

T2G Club forums are run like parties (no sales) so everyone feels comfortable about expressing themselves, learning and having the opportunity to get to know people in their community better. Guests walk away with something, be it handouts, new knowledge, new friends and quality gifts won from games and can enter for the final gift give-away. Be part of something that is fun and makes a difference!
