SUN & FUN LONG AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY Weekend in BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA

TRIP NOW CLOSED TO NEW RSVP'S. IF YOU WOULD LOVE TO JOIN US THEN PLEASE MESSAGE ME. THERE ARE 10 TRAVEL BUDDIES GOING AT PRESENT. Join Travel Buddies for a fantastic, fun, 4 day weekend in the beautiful city of Bratislava in Slovakia. Explore the old town, dine on hearty cuisine and soak up the nightlife in the city. Browse the old town and relax and watch the world go by and as if that wasn't enough.... oh yes.... Bratislava even has it's own UFO lookout tower..... and.... a virtual reality Gin & Tonic bar! Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is set along the Danube River by the border with Austria and Hungary. It’s surrounded by vineyards and the Little Carpathian mountains, crisscrossed with forested hiking and cycling trails. The pedestrian-only, 18th-century old town is known for its lively bars and cafes. Perched atop a hill, the reconstructed Bratislava Castle overlooks old town and the Danube. The charming – if tiny – old town (starý mesto) is the place to start appreciating Bratislava. Stroll narrow pedestrian streets of pastel-coloured 18th-century buildings or sample the myriad sidewalk cafes under the watchful gaze of the city castle, which harks back to medieval times. Done with the old? In with the new(er): the city boasts intriguing socialist-era architecture, and one of Eastern Europe's most spectacular modern art spaces. Contrasts like this are all part of Bratislava's allure. Itinerary. Day 1. After meeting at Luton airport we will take our flight to Bratislava and catch our private transfer to the Hotel Tatra where we will be staying for the next three nights. Our accommodation for the three nights is 350 yards from the old town We will be staying in twin rooms with en-suite bathroom for 3 nights and breakfast is included each morning. 15 minutes walk from Bratislava Castle, It has a restaurant, a shared lounge, and free WiFi available in all areas. You will be paired with a likeminded Travel Buddy unless there is someone that you plan to share with when you join up to the trip, in which case just let me know and I will put you down as roomies. Alternatively, you can choose to have a single room to yourself for a supplement of £70 for three nights, you will just need to let me know if you would like this when you RSVP and will need to pay the extra when the balance for the trip is due. (Please note that the single rooms do have a single bed) The Travel Buddies trips work on the basis that as long as you are having a good time then that is what matters, if you don't feel like coming on one of the excursions or joining the rest of the group for dinner one evening then that is absolutely fine. This is an adventure for everyone and there is nothing worse than having to go somewhere/do something that you don't really fancy! After a little time to settle in to our accommodation we will walk to the meeting point for a private walking tour....... this is fully guided and will last approx. 2-2.5 hours. We will then head to a restaurant in the old town for dinner where we can sample the traditional foods. Day 2. After breakfast we will meet in the lobby to head out for a short tour of Bratislava castle by Presporacik. (small open sided train like vehicle) We will be taken through the old parts of the city, up to Bratislava Castle. The Courtyard of the medieval castle offers magnificent views of the city and surroundings, nice baroque garden and parks. The tour concludes with a drive back to our original departure point. ( a 14 minute walk from the hotel) We then have the rest of the day for site seeing of the city. St Elizabeth's Blue Church The Church of St. Elizabeth, commonly known as Blue Church, is a Hungarian Secessionist Catholic church located in the eastern part of the Old Town in Bratislava. It looks like it is from a fairy-tale. It is Bratislava’s most appealing art nouveau building, a model of which is present in Brussels as well, representing Slovakia. When you look at it on a sunny day, it has the same color as the sky – and has its name for this obvious reason. Its facade is blue. Its mosaics are blue. Its majolicas are blue. Everything, including the pale blue-gazed roof through the gate is blue. And not only exterior – its interior is also painted in shades of pale blue. UFO Bridge and tower. Take a look at the 7th largest hanging bridge in the world. Get a panoramic view on the whole Bratislava from the open-air observation deck on top of its UFO-shaped cupola. Refresh yourself in a fine dining restaurant or a bar which are up there, too. But mainly – get your camera ready! Photos taken here will surely be a great memory! The entrance to the UFO deck is around 7 euros. We will have dinner at a traditional Slovakian restaurant that is close to the hotel before heading to a Virtual reality gin & Tonic bar where we have been booked in to take part in the virtual reality games. This really will be one of the funniest evenings you will ever have! We went as a group last June and didn't stop laughing throughout our time there. Day 3 After breakfast everyone can decide what they fancy doing...there is the opportunity to go to Wakelake for the day, this is a natural lake in the city and a popular spot for enjoying the sun and taking some time out. Depending on who wants to go we can either arrange a taxi transfer or can take the train. ( around 40 minutes on 2 trains) Here you can sunbathe, enjoy food and drinks or even have a go at wake boarding or some of the other sports on offer. There is a small entrance fee of around 4 euros. If that is not your bag then there is lots to do and see in the city........ There are several parks and green areas that are accessible by a short walk or bus ride including a park and gardens across the road from the hotel,Bratislava forest park and Koliba Park, where you can even try out summer bobsledding or a high ropes course. Or why not try your hand at bronze Statue Spotting... As Bratislava looked to shed the greyness of the Communist era many buildings were repainted. In an attempt to enliven the city centre, a few quirky statues were installed. Their popularity with tourists led to new statues, filling the centre of Bratislava with funny and quirky installations. See how many you can spot! We will eat dinner at a traditional Slovakian restaurant that is reasonably priced. As the city will be busy we will ensure that there is a meal booked for the group each evening although if you don't fancy joining one night then that is fine. Day 4 After a breakfast at the hotel we will be able to leave our luggage safely and spend our last few hours sightseeing or doing a little souvenir shopping before taking our private transfer to the airport at around 1pm. A room to yourself is available for £70 for the 3 nights. This needs to be paid at the same time as the balance. MINI SERBIAN TOUR, Belgrade, Zlatibar Mountain, Sargan 8 Train Ride & Mecavnik.

TRIP NOW CLOSED TO NEW RSVP'S. IF YOU WOULD LOVE TO JOIN US THEN PLEASE MESSAGE ME. THERE ARE 10 TRAVEL BUDDIES GOING AT PRESENT. Upon browsing for alternative city breaks I came across this gem of a find, and thought it might appeal to those Travel Buddies amongst us that fancy something a little different, somewhere we may have not considered visiting before. And this is far more than a city break in Belgrade, we are also going to enjoy a 2 day overnight trip exploring Western Serbia with a visit to Zlatibor Mountain, a train journey on the Sargan Eight, and a tour of the Wooden City of Mecavnik. Plus, enjoy some good old Western Serbian home cooked cuisine. This really is a trip that is not to be missed! The flight times are great as well, so , who's coming to join us as we explore a brand new country. Serbia. Day 1. 3rd September There isn't a European capital with a more turbulent history than Belgrade. At the frontier of empires and the junction of the great Danube and Sava rivers, this is one of the oldest cities on the continent. Blending high culture with a fun-loving spirit. You can sense this lust for life on Skardarlija, the Bohemian street, or the splavovi, party boats that are moored on the Danube and Sava. Belgrade’s fortress dominates the cityscape, while orthodox churches and palaces for the Serbian royalty cropped up after Serbia won independence in the 19th century. Upon arrival at the airport in Belgrade we will take our private transfer ( approx 25 mins ) to our hotel in the city where we will be spending the next 2 nights. Our twin rooms with en-suite bathroom all have wifi and tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast is included each morning. Our hotel, Maison Royale is set on vibrant Knez Mihailova Street, Belgrade’s most impressive pedestrian street and shopping zone, next to the new Shopping center Rajiceva and close to city’s oldest historical sites like Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park. Republic Square is 650 yards away. There is an option to have a room to yourself for £110 for the 4 nights, if you would like one of these, please let me know when you RSVP. After a little time to settle in and relax we will go our for dinner locally, why not try some Serbian specialities.... The Travel Buddies trips work on the basis that as long as you are having a good time then that is what matters, if you don't feel like coming on one of the excursions or joining the rest of the group for dinner one evening then that is absolutely fine. This is an adventure for everyone and there is nothing worse than having to go somewhere/do something that you don't really fancy! Day 2. 4th September We start today with a guided walking tour of Belgrade which lasts 2 hours after which we have free to time to explore the city for ourselves. Some of the things we may wish to visit are .... The Belgrade Fortress which used to contain the entire city and has lived through 2,000 years of conflict. The Skadarlija Area. Car-free and paved with bumpy cobblestones, Skadarlija has been a bohemian haunt since the 1800s and is Belgrade’s answer to Montmartre. Like its Parisian counterpart, Skadarlija’s glory days were in the early 1900s when famous but cash-strapped Serbian singers, musicians, writers and poets lived, worked and performed here. The perfect place to have a coffee and watch the world go by. The Church of St Sava. The largest Orthodox Church in the Balkan region, and the second largest in the world, St Sava is an ever-present monument in Serbia’s capital. High on the Vračar plateau, you can see the church’s white granite and marble walls from any approach to Belgrade, while the 50 bells that sound noon ring out across the city. Republic Square. At the southern end of Knez Mihailova is Republic Square, with some of the city’s most important landmarks and a business district where Belgrade is at its most dynamic. It is the meeting point of choice for many Belgradians. The Serbian National Theatre and National Museum are here, as is the Prince Mihailo Monument. Zemunski Kej. Also known as Kej Oslobođenja (Quay of Liberation), this waterside promenade is the best place in Belgrade to take in the Danub, here we can take in sumptuous views of Europe’s second-longest river just where it joins with the Sava. There are restaurants every few steps, many on barges and other old vessels (splavovi), while a small fleet of boats are waiting if you’d like a trip on the Danube. Dinner locally Day 3. 5th September After an early breakfast and check out we head toward Western Serbia, known for its wild and untouched nature, tasty cuisine and friendly and hospitable people. Two and a half hours ride we’ll spend enjoying the beautiful landscapes and listen to interesting stories about this part of the country. Our first stop is Bajina Bašta, a small town in the foothill of Mt. Tara. Here, we will see the world-famous attraction, “The House on the Drina”, an isolated house made of logs on a river stone. After a photo stop and a refreshment, we will continue our trip to the famous Sargan Eight. A unique narrow-gauge railway. During our ride, we will stop at several viewpoints from which one can see fabulous views over Mokra Gora. Authentic cars with wooden seats, wood burning stove and a characteristic rattling sound will take us back to 1925 when this railway was put in operation and made a connection between Belgrade and the Adriatic Sea. After almost two and a half hour ride we return to the departing station from where we continue our journey to the nearby Mećavnik, or Drvengrad (Wooden City). The famous director Emir Kusturica (two times Palme D’Or in Cannes winner) made a decision to build it during the shooting of his film “Life is a miracle”. He decided to convey ruined wooden chalets from the slopes of the mountain, to restore them, equip with luxurious facilities, and to form a new settlement. After Mećavnik, we will go to our hotel, right in time for a delicious and abundant dinner, that will introduce us to the very well-known cuisine of the Western Serbia, irresistibly delicious and very piquant. There are numerous footpaths around the hotel, so we can enjoy an after dinner walk. Overnight in a 3 star hotel Day 4. 6th September Tomorrow, after breakfast, we will start exploring probably the most beautiful mountain of Serbia, and maybe one of the most beautiful in whole Europe – Mountain Tara. You will not find many places which have same feeling of peace and quiet as Tara does. We will walk through one of the many footpaths of Tara, getting us to the incredibly beautiful viewpoint on Canyon of the Drina, the famous Banjska Stena viewpoint. Here we will have the chance to make excellent photos and enjoy a breathtaking view. After a walk back to our vehicle, we will get on our way to the second pearl of Western Serbia, the Zlatibor mountain. The region of Zlatibor is famous for its folk architecture, native culture and traditions, wealthy and diverse ethnic heritage, its widely-renowned culinary specialities, healthy food and the balmy climate which has earned Zlatibor a reputation for its healthy air and the status of one of the most popular tourist destinations in Serbia. It encompasses large swathes of picturesque mountain pastures and meadows, scattered with individual or small groups of old Scots pine and is made distinctive by its shallow winding brooks and streams. Around the boundary of the plateau, there are impassable gorges, caves, potholes and mixed woodlands of Scots pine, European black pine, spruce, firs, beech, sessile oak and other species of tree. Here, we will have a traditional lunch made of specialities of Zlatibor region. (not included). After we have fed our eyes and souls with beauty and our stomachs with a good lunch, we head back to Belgrade for our final evening. Dinner tonight will be on the famous, bohemian street, Skadarlija, with with live music, the perfect way to spend a lest evening in the city.
