TriDev: Lessons Learned building a native app with a C SDK

Details

Vendors don't like to make our lives easy.

Some provide libraries for their hardware in one language only: C. In today's world, many aren't well-versed in C, and many features considered to be easy like HTTP servers are prohibitively hard in C due to a lack of standard library functionality.

Join me in a recap of my journey trying to fit this vendor's C SDK into various modern FFI environments in an attempt to lessen the pain of working with the library. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll wonder why I chose C++ with all the wonderful other choices out there that don't provide any footguns.

All I wanted was some HTTP!

Each meetup starts at 6PM with a few minutes of chat and networking. At 6:15 a speaker gives the talk on the topic of the night. We try to limit the talk to an hour, so at 7:15 we can start our giveaways. We try and dismiss around 7:30 to have some time for discussion or extra Q/A with the speaker for folks who want to hang around, but allow for others to get home or to other obligations if needed. Doors close at 8.
