Subject: [Charlotte-Gardeners-and-Permacultureist] Permaculture Follow Up 2/25/12

I wanted to follow up after tonight's great meetup.  We had an amazing turn out and I think we were all excited to see so many people interested. I try to do an email like this after each meetup and capture some of the conversations, share resources and some thoughts.
First thing I wanted to do is reiterate the vision for the permaculture discussion group.  My hope is that we all come together for a discussion, I will help kick things off, but then it's up to everyone carry it forward.  I think we achieved this vision and everyone was great tonight, I really enjoyed the conversations and I have got a lot of positive feedback.
At the end of this email is the resource sheet that I handed out with a few tweaks.
We are going to meetup in about a months time for our second permaculture group, I am thinking of bringing a great 50 minute documentary done by the BBC on permaculture.  It's really good and it should spark some great conversations!
Until then I thought I would share this video about Cuba.  This video came up in our small group and it talks about when embargoes/sanctions were placed on Cuba.  When this happened, it essentially created an artificial peak oil crisis.  Cuba at the time imported a huge amount of what it needed to run itself and when the decree was made, overnight the ships stopped coming.  The result was people were forced to face their need for food and other community needs, not from a far off place, but in their own backyard. Check it out:
Permaculture Defined
Bill Mollison:                  Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted & thoughtful observation rather than protracted & thoughtless labor; of looking at plants & animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single-product system.
David Holmgren:            Permaculture is defined as consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature, while yielding an abundance of food, fiber and energy for the provision of local needs.  More precisely I see Permaculture as the use of systems thinking and design principles that provide the organizing framework for implementing the above vision
