What we’re about
This is a group for anyone interested in astronomy. We will meet at various public places in the Twin Cities to star gaze, promote awareness, and share knowledge. Bring your telescopes, though owning a telescope isn't necessary. But having enthusiasm for space is. These events generally won't be at typical "dark sky sites" -- though of course some will -- but instead at places chosen to share our scopes with the public. Looking forward to exploring the night sky with everybody.

See all- Annular Solar EclipseNeeds location
Annularity, where the Sun forms a ‘ring of fire’ around the Moon, is visible along a narrow path that crosses the USA from Oregon to Texas. It then passes over Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula, plus parts of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Brazil. Elsewhere in the Americas—from Alaska to Argentina—a partial eclipse will be visible.
The sun rises around 7:30am, chasing down the moon all morning until reaching maximum visible in MN around noon. Not very spectacular from MN, so go SW many hours to see it better.
- Total Solar Eclipse 2024Needs location
This is the third time in seven years that a total or annular eclipse crosses the United States mainland, following the total eclipse of August 2017 and the annular eclipse of October 2023.
The narrow path of totality—where the Moon covers the Sun completely, causing a total eclipse—runs through Mexico (from Sinaloa to Coahuila), the USA (from Texas to Maine), and Canada (from Ontario to Newfoundland). A partial eclipse will be visible across nearly all of North America, and a sliver of western Europe.MN maximum should be around 2pm.
Closest to MN to see totality would be Indiana or Illinois if you want to road trip it.
