I just posted a Code of Conduct to the group:
There is a longer version, but the short version is pretty straightforward:
"The Twin Cities (Data) Visualization group (TCDataViz) is dedicated
to a harassment-free experience for everyone. Be kind to one another.
Do not insult or put down other members. Behave civilly.”
Look it over and do let me know if you have any suggestions, comments,
This is not in reaction to any specific event, but more of a
pro-active step so that bad things are less likely to happen and we
have a mechanism/expectation on how to deal with things if they do
As far as I know, I am the only offender, as I presented/critiqued the
Twitter hate speech map which had offensive/hateful language. My
sincerest apologies. Admittedly I did not actually look at it before
the meeting, and now make sure to look at everything before presenting
it to the group.
If you feel like you have been harassed or otherwise made
uncomfortable at one our meetings (past or future), do let me know,
and I will do my best to address it. Often, the offenses are not
explicit or obvious to the whole group or even myself, so please do
speak up if you feel you have been harassed in any way and I will
ensure privacy and discreetness.
All the best,
