Day trip to Canterbury on Sun 20 Jan
We're going on a day trip to Canterbury on Sunday 20th January. Canterbury is Britain's holiest city, home of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the cradle of English Christianity. It was the destination for pilgrimages for hundreds of years, where people from all over Christendom took the once in a lifetime journey to visit the shrine to Saint Thomas Becket, who was murdered at the cathedral. Canterbury was further made famous by Geoffrey Chaucer's book The Canterbury Tales, a collection of stories about pilgrims travelling to visit St Thomas Becket’s shrine. Canterbury is now a busy market city with much of its medieval character preserved, and is visited by 2 million tourists each year. Things to see include Canterbury Cathedral, the Westgate which is the largest surviving city gate in England, the Norman Canterbury Castle, St Martin's Church which is the oldest church in Britain, St Augustine's Abbey ruins, the Roman Museum, the city wall founded in Roman times, and 12th/13th century buildings by the River Stour: Greyfriars, Blackfriars and Eastbridge Hospital.
