We're going on a day trip to Canterbury on Sunday 20th January. Canterbury is Britain's holiest city, home of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the cradle of English Christianity. It was the destination for pilgrimages for hundreds of years, where people from all over Christendom took the once in a lifetime journey to visit the shrine to Saint Thomas Becket, who was murdered at the cathedral. Canterbury was further made famous by Geoffrey Chaucer's book The Canterbury Tales, a collection of stories about pilgrims travelling to visit St Thomas Becket’s shrine. Canterbury is now a busy market city with much of its medieval character preserved, and is visited by 2 million tourists each year. Things to see include Canterbury Cathedral, the Westgate which is the largest surviving city gate in England, the Norman Canterbury Castle, St Martin's Church which is the oldest church in Britain, St Augustine's Abbey ruins, the Roman Museum, the city wall founded in Roman times, and 12th/13th century buildings by the River Stour: Greyfriars, Blackfriars and Eastbridge Hospital. TRIP COST: We're going by coach, from near Elephant & Castle station, and places are limited. Arrive early so we can check you off the guest list, and you can get a coffee, use toilets, meet everyone, and board the coach. # 8.30am - Coach departs. # 10.45am - We'll arrive in Canterbury, and we'll have our guided tour of the town as we take in the sights. # 1.30pm - We'll visit Canterbury Cathedral. # 2.30pm - We'll have a lunch break. # 3.30pm - You can explore the medieval city and visit attractions, museums, boat cruise, take photos, try local foods, and buy souvenirs. # 5.10pm - Meet at the Canterbury Coach Park, Canterbury, CT1 1BW. We're going on a day trip to Stonehenge and Salisbury on Saturday 26th January. Stonehenge is one of the oldest prehistoric sites in Europe and is also a UN World Heritage Site. It's the remains of a ring of giant standing stones set within earthworks, constructed from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. Salisbury has been an important provincial city for more than a thousand years, and its streets form an architectural timeline ranging from medieval walls and half-timbered Tudor town houses to Georgian mansions and Victorian villas. Salisbury is dominated by its majestic 800-year-old cathedral that's topped by the tallest spire in England. The cathedral is home to one of the most important documents in the world, the Magna Carta, which for the first time gave all 'free men' the right to justice and a fair trial, and created the very idea of human rights. "No man shall be arrested or imprisoned except by the judgment of their equals and by the law of the land. To no one will we sell, to no one deny or delay right or justice." We're going on a day trip to Oxford on Sunday 3rd February. Oxford, the ‘city of dreaming spires’ is steeped in a rich and fascinating history. Famous for it's prestigious Oxford University and its 38 colleges, and for over 800 years it has been home to royalty and many notable scholars. The Radcliffe Camera, Bodleian Library and Bridge of Sighs make up just a few of the famous picturesque buildings of Oxford. Its charming scenery has been the inspiration for many, including Lewis Carroll and J.R.R Tolkien, and there are many recognisable scenes from popular films such as Harry Potter. TRIP COST: We're going by coach, leaving from near Hammersmith station, and places are limited. It's £25 each for the organised trip including your 2-way coach journey and a guided tour of Oxford, and when you RSVP for this event you will need to pay online as we need to book the coach in advance and need to manage numbers. Stratford-upon-Avon is a market town steeped in the history of its most famous resident, William Shakespeare, regarded as the world's greatest playwright. The town has many 16th century Tudor buildings including the home where Shakespeare was born, the cottage where Anne Hathaway resided before their marriage, and the church where the couple is buried. The Royal Shakespeare Company resides in Stratford's Royal Shakespeare Theatre, one of Britain's most important cultural venues. The Stratford-upon-Avon Canal passes through enchanting countryside in the heart of England, cutting through the Forest of Arden and an area rich in Shakespearean history.
