Seminar Series: Bernadette Minton, VP Data Science Solutions, MCG Health

Talk Abstract:
Bernadette will cover examples from her experience at small and large companies of combining product innovation methodologies and artificial intelligence solutions. The examples are from healthcare and other industries, and include both consumer-facing products, as well as products used in business settings. Bernadette has used engineering design, “SIPS”, lean startup, and working backwards approaches to increase the probability of building successful AI innovations. Bernadette has experimented and refined these principles in the context of both consumer-facing AI applications and with B2B AI products. Recently, Bernadette has been applying product innovation methodologies in her current role as the head of the data science products team at a leading healthcare IT company. Her interest in learning how to deliver ever more valuable AI solutions in less time promises to be a life-long journey.

Speaker Bio:
Bernadette is a digital product development leader with an extensive and varied background in applying AI Technologies to solve “problems that matter”. She has a Masters in CS from Carnegie Mellon, and has delivered several products leveraging AI, including machine learning and natural language processing. At Zynx Health, she led a team that built Knowledge Analyzer - an AI-based product that identifies evidence-based gaps in order sets and care plans. At Providence St. Joseph Health, she led the initial development of online scheduling and founded the Enabling Technologies team to build machine learning and natural language products. The Enabling Tech team leveraged EMR data to train a system to “read” insurance card images and perform real-time insurance eligibility checks. They also used patient-provided data about health conditions to build a highly accurate chatbot that helps patients decide whether low-acuity care is appropriate, and if so, to choose a convenient venue (retail clinic, telehealth visit or home visit). Bernadette's focus is using rich data sources and AI technologies to improve the effective delivery of health care.
