Responsive Design - UX Breakfast Club

The UX Breakfast Club, sponsored by The Los Angeles User Experience Meetup group and Vitamin T, provides a setting to discuss topics related to User Experience or emerging issues in the field that may be impacting the discipline.

The first UX Breakfast Club will be on Saturday, June 16th at 9:00 AM at Cafe Laurent in Culver City. The event is free. You will notice that you are required to place a deposit when you submit your RSVP. Your money will be refunded if you attend. This allows us to provide a precise reservation to Cafe Laurent.

The topic of the first gathering will be on Responsive Design. We are please that the following experts have agreed to share their experience and knowledge with us:

Albi Cecioni is a Senior Information Architect and UX Designer at SapientNitro, where he specializes in mobile applications and web. In his few spare moments he pursues his true passions - spending time with his twin boys, cooking recipes from his motherland (Italy) and making origami. Additionally, he is pursuing a few independent projects involving game design, e-learning and photography.

Mario Noble has been doing web design and development for over 9 years and is passionate about the web. He believes context sensitive solutions are only going to become more necessary in the mobile space and that knowing when to use and not use Responsive Design as one of those solutions is as important as knowing how to implement it.

Sharon Sachse, owner of the HTML5 Developers LA Meetup group, does Drupal web development at LA ACM SIGGRAPHAGM, is the host of DDLA - Digital Designers Los Angeles and is a designer/motion graphics expert in website design and development.

Janine Warner is a web designer, internet strategist, and creator of DigitalFamily.com. She's the author of more than 25 books, including Web Sites DIY For Dummies, iPhone & iPad Web Design For Dummies, and Dreamweaver For Dummies (every edition). Her experience includes serving as Director of New Media for The Miami Herald, consulting with a major book publisher in Moscow, and judging the Arroba de Oro Latin American Internet Awards.

I just heard that media queries are now an official web standard... From 2 article with lots of great resources: http://www.webmonkey.com/2012/01/building-a-responsive-future-friendly-web-for-everyone/

Hi all, here's my first crack at responsive design. As I mentioned, my big issue is when I shrink down the width no my Mac, the layout doesn't switch. It does show up on my phone but if I go away from my browser and then come back to it, the main layout comes up. That's just odd. http://www.rubyartsentertainment.com/

In the email I just sent, the link to Mario Noble's meetup doesn't seem to work. He runs the Southern California Web Designers & Developers, http://www.meetup.com/socalwdd/ It's a great group.

Loved the format! Much more engaging than the usual speaker-talk. Plus: pancakes!

Hi Folks, I wanted to share this article "What does it mean to create responsive, or adaptive, web designs?" written by one of our guest experts, Janine Warner. She is also the author of more than 25 books. http://www.digitalfamily.com/dreamweaver/CS6/Adaptive-Web-Design.html

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning! Just a reminder about parking that there is a small lot in the back, but there is also a lot of free street parking at the park next door.

Some of my questions are about percentage based design versus fixed-width design with breakpoints; ffixed-height design, or frameworks such as Foundation or the Twitter Bootstrap. Also, what about responsive images? There's been a lot of talk about this subject lately. I realize the breakfast can't cover all aspects of RWD, but it would be nice to touch on some of these topics. Looking forward to this!

If you have any responsive design questions, feel free to post them before we get together.
