Keynote:
"Integrating UX"
Westley Knight, Digital Product Designer

The design centred - or design driven - business. Those organisations that have nurtured design thinking as core to their business model. We are constantly regaled with stories of how these companies put users at the heart of their thinking, at the heart of their products. And yet these are just a handful of businesses, predominantly emerging out of the start-up culture in Silicon Valley.

But what about the rest of us?

We work in businesses that existed long before the internet, where the corporate structure issues directives from board level, where design can, unfortunately, be the last thing on their minds.

For the past 2 years I have been the sole UX designer in a business that recognised the need for user centred design, without really knowing what to do with it.

This session will dive in to the issues that a UX team or individual can face when they have to fight for the user every step of the way. We'll work through commonlyoccurring scenarios and you'll leave with the tools and techniques that can be used to open the minds of others to new approaches, instigate change in organisational culture and underline the importance of user centred design thinking throughout your organisation.

About Westley

Westley is a digital product designer (part front-end developer, part user experience-er, and part UI designer) with over 16 years' experience in designing and building things for people to use on the web. He's worked in both agency and in-house environments - and has occasionally done some freelance projects on the side - across multiple industries; most recently in retail, travel and insurance.

Outside work, his time is spent with his wife and 4 children (as you can imagine, this takes up the vast majority!), a couple of side projects, some Netflix binge-watching, occasional socialising, not enough sleep, and definitely not enough exercise.

Lightning talk:
"10 ways to get more women applying for your tech jobs"
Niki Forecast, Head of Design and UX at Global Initiative

A follow-up to her recent talk: 'Where did all the women go?' at UX in the City in April; in this lighting talk Niki focuses on short, practical steps that employers and all members of the tech industry can take to help drive more women in, and make the industry a more diverse and exciting place to work.
