Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are introducing new immersive experiences. If the future of entertainment is going to be experience-based, how does UX design fit into this brave new world?

For several decades there has been great discussion of convergence between film and video games, but when it started nobody predicted that the web, mobile apps, and immersive entertainment would be part of the conversation. Now these disciplines are rapidly coming together to define the experiences that will forever change the way we interact with machines and each other.

Old disciplines must evolve – filmmakers, app and game developers, even live event producers must all expand their skills into a slew of new areas, some of them already comfortably dominated by UX and UI designers. In this time of great flux, UX designers are uniquely positioned to expand their skills to become the storytellers of the next century and beyond, forging a path into these emerging mediums.

Andrew Cochrane (http://www.andrew-cochrane.com/biography/) is a Director for Mirada (http://www.mirada.com/) – an independent creative studio co-founded by Guillermo del Toro. Many of his projects involve Mirada’s exciting digital/interactive group, which focuses on combining the company’s passion for storytelling with new forms of immersion and interaction. As a creative and technical leader, Andrew offers a unique blend of narrative focus, artistic savvy, and high-tech problem solving.
