Global Accessibility Awareness Day!

Los Angeles Usability Professionals’ Association and LA PHP Meetup are delighted to announce a joint event, LA’s first Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). GAAD is a community-driven international effort initiated by LA’s own Joe Devon to increase awareness of digital (web, software, mobile app/device, touch screen kiosk, etc.) accessibility for people with disabilities.

Do you know how well the interfaces you design or build work for users with disabilities? Users browsing the web with accessibility devices are often frustrated by the barriers that we as designers & developers unknowingly put in their way. Our guest speakers will be:

  • Todd Kloots, Sr. Accessibility Engineer, Yahoo! Todd creates and teaches classes on accessibility for designers, engineers and product managers, and will illustrate how screen readers interpret web designs and the common obstacles they face.
  • Victor Tsaran, Sr. Inclusive Design Program Manager, Yahoo! Victor, who is visually impaired, will outline the current state of accessibility on mobile devices and various mobile platforms.
  • Zahir Herz, Sr. Web Developer at Fox Digital Media, will illustrate special screen enlargement technology that he uses for those with partial visual impairment. He will share a view into his work environment, and what he would like to see more of in mobile apps.

Join us for this compelling exploration of what we can all do to make the digital world more inclusive and accessible.

What a great event! This was my first UPA meetup. The presenters were excellent and really got my wheels turning. I learned a lot about accessibility for desktop and mobile. This meetup is such a friendly and interesting group. Thank you Kathryn, Mickey, and all who coordinated. Looking forward to the next one!

The speakers were very informative about their experiences as developers and users of accessible technology. I am looking forward to the next Meetup of this kind.

Awesome event. Thanks Kathryn for making this happen. I learned a lot, I met some really cool people, and I'm already made connections that will impact my work for years.

This was a great introduction to Accessibility for mobile and desktop sites, and I thought the spectrum of presenters was perfect. Really got me started thinking about this kind of stuff, and piqued my curiosity (as Vicktor says, "BE CURIOUS!").

Great, great speakers. Glad that status of accessibility on mobile was explored. Interesting to describe some users as 'sighted', I think it's a great perspective just realizing that as users we each have our own unique characteristics and expectations for feedback. Can't wait til the LA Accessibility camp! Cheers to everyone involved in putting this together!
