  • UXPALA PRESENTS WORLD USABILITY DAY 2018: Dark UX Case Studies & Actions
***RSVP ON EVENTBRITE!!*** https://110818.eventbrite.com/?aff=MU UXPALA PRESENTS WORLD USABILITY DAY 2018: Dark UX Case Studies and Actions You Can Take Have you ever had a client say they want to build a the Death Star product? Unwittingly, what comes to mind is how easily the rebels blew up that WMD - 3 times, to be accurate. Taking advantage of human haste, inattention of desire, frustration factors and the sense of "lacking" - or the fear of missing out (FOMO) - is the dark side of UX and the definition of Dark Patterns and Dark UX. Plus our speakers will give us insight, remedies and actionable points on what we can do as designers, to regroup and refocus efforts on usability and user love. How Good UX Designers Can Save the Climate from Evil Darkness - Jill Vacarra For too long the the environmental impact of the products we design has remained hidden, out of sight, out of mind. We can no longer talk about the ethics of UX without focusing on what WE can do to design sustainable UX. This talk shines a light on the big dirty secret of digital design’s giant carbon footprint, with concrete and innovative steps UX designers can take to be Sustainable UX Superheroes. How I’ve Failed Users (So You Don’t Have To) - Michael Newcomb Things don’t always go as planned, but if you’re reflective, hindsight can be 20/20. This talk will give you a methodology for approaching those critical moments where you can make a difference as a designer by unpacking some scenarios where I have failed. The Future is dark… but is it still usable - Skot Carruth I’ve seen the future of UX, and it is dark. Literally. Once the default for screen design, dark UI is now experiencing a renaissance after being out of favor for decades. In this talk, we’ll explore the influence that FUIs (fictional UIs) and sex appeal have on modern interfaces and what we can do to create a digital future that is both sexy and usable. ++SPEAKERS: Skot Carruth - CEO and co-founder of Philosophie https://www.linkedin.com/in/skotcarruth/ @skotcarruth @gophilosophie Michael Newcomb - Associate Experience Strategy Director at Code & Theory https://www.linkedin.com/in/minewcomb/ TW: @IHateMike IG: @IHateMikeToo Jill Vacarra - Partner, User Experience & Content Strategy at Primitive Spark https://www.linkedin.com/in/jvacarra/ @jvacarra SPONSORS: PHILOSOPHIE - THINK BY MAKING. • Partner Event: SCWDD Presents - Co-ops for Creatives
--RSVP ON PARTNER EVENTBRITE-- https://www.eventbrite.com/e/co-ops-for-creatives-tickets-50885782746 Feeling anxious, disempowered or unsupported as a freelancer/contractor, employee or an entrepreneur? There is a fourth alternative business structure, Worker/Owner Cooperatives (Co-ops). Find out more and network with like minded people at this event! ** Why Creative Co-ops? ** Creative endeavors like Design and Development can be a good match for the Co-op model because they can be labor and skill intensive without necessarily needing lots of upfront capital. Worker and Owner incentives are aligned because they’re one and the same. Freelancers have access to a wider range of capabilities because of their team. People who were employees may now have a say so in what, how and why things are done. Entrepreneurs no longer need to have all the answers and burden trying to spin up, incentivize employees, manage and maintain a venture. Essentially it follows a democratic model as opposed to a hierarchical model of governance. ** What is it? ** On a basic level, worker-owner co-ops involve a team of people who band together to create a business in order survive and prosper; not necessarily for shareholder or investor profit. They try to follow the 7 Cooperative Principles, have equal power, decision making and responsibility for the business. They thus reap the rewards and better ride the downturns together because the business only needs to support its members. I personally believe that humans can be stronger when they work together and have an equal stake plus a real say so in their long term efforts. ** What will this event cover? ** - Brief overview of Co-ops - Discussing advantages and disadvantages compared to other systems - What legal structures are available (formal coop vs LLC vs Corps) - How they operate (agreements, financials, coordination, agreements, capital, etc.) - Tools, Resources and the impact of Technology - Q&A plus panelist discussion ** Panelists ** We're very happy to have these various panelists participating remotely from New York, New Zealand and Barcelona!
