How can a clear UX strategy guide the development of and contribute to the success and impact of a civic app? Claire Micklin will lead you through the process of ideating, planning, creating, and publicizing My Building Doesn’t Recycle (http://mybuildingdoesntrecycle.com/), a civic app that allows Chicagoans to report that their building management is not providing recycling services. She will also touch on how her background as a UX designer helped her navigate all stages of the project and continues to influence decisions about how to use the app to further her group’s goal of pushing the city of Chicago to enforce its multi-unit recycling law.
Claire Micklin is the UX lead for My Building Doesn’t Recycle, a civic app she created with Ben Wilhelm and Alex Kahn at Chi Hack Night, a meetup focused on sharing knowledge about civic tech and building civic apps. My Building Doesn’t Recycle has been covered in WBEZ’s “Tech Shift” and “Curious City”, as well as in the Chicago Tribune. As an interaction designer in Web Services at the University of Chicago, Claire plans and designs websites and apps for clients across the University.
