Abstract:
IOTA has introduced a paradigm shift in the design of distributed ledger technologies. Unlike Bitcoin-like blockchains, IOTA does not need miners to secure the network. This avoids expensive mining races and enables feeless micro transactions which makes IOTA a strong candidate for becoming the backbone of the upcoming Internet-of-Things paradigm.
In order to store payments and data, IOTA uses the Tangle, a data structure where each transaction has to approve a set of prior transactions, forming a directed acyclic graph. Several design choices of traditional blockchains must be revisited according to the non-trivial structure of the Tangle: how do nodes peer with each other by discouraging eclipse attacks? Is it possible to design a Byzantine resistant consensus algorithm which achieves fast finality? How to make the network scalable?
In this particular occasion, we present a state of the art summary of the protocol and propose a list of practical activities and demonstrations using the IOTA Research node software, such as creation and transfers of native assets and the extraction of pseudorandom values.
BIO:
Luigi Vigneri
A senior research scientist at IOTA Foundation, leading the networking team. His current research interests concern network optimization and scalability in the context of distributed ledger technologies. Prior to IOTA, Luigi joined Huawei Research Lab in Paris as a postdoctoral researcher working on 5G networks, online machine learning and artificial intelligence. In 2017, he obtained his Ph.D. in Mobile Communications from EURECOM, France, with a thesis on caching popular content in vehicular networks.
Andreas Penzkofer
A senior research scientist at IOTA Foundation, leading the analysis group - which focuses on testing and studying the prototype node software. His research is in the area of consensus mechanisms, networking models, and graph algorithms. Andreas received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering on the topic of analytical modelling for novel wind turbine generators.
Olivia Saa
A research scientist at the IOTA Foundation. Her main interests are consensus protocols and the mathematical modeling of the Tangle dynamics, among other stochastic processes inherent to the protocol. In 2020, she obtained her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of São Paulo, with a thesis on mathematical aspects of DAG-based distributed ledger systems.
