We're excited to host you at our fourth edition of Design Night! Come along to hear interesting talks about design and research.

Talks:

A Level Playing Field: What Sports, Hearing Loss, and Language Can Teach Us About Better Communication in UX by Quinn Keast (Designer at Marley Spoon)

How do we improve how we communicate within our digital products and experiences? Many of the techniques we can bring into our day-to-day work can be found in how we solve barriers to communication on the playing field. Quinn Keast, a UX designer with hearing loss who can only read lips in English, will share a unique perspective on what he’s learned about building understanding across cultures, languages, and individual capabilities throughout the course of his 17-year Ultimate Frisbee playing career—which culminated in moving to Berlin and joining a German Ultimate team.

Learning from Urban Design by Joost van der Ree (Sr. Product Designer at Uber)

People always have been shaping the world they live in. As cities have been growing, problems such as congestion and waste have been growing as well, increasing the importance of urban design. Although digital product design is fairly new, there are many parallels we can draw with the design of cities. What can we learn from it?

Designing for Everyone, Everywhere by Anurag Arora, Naman Mathur (Design and Research at Uber)

https://twitter.com/Naman__M
Hundreds of millions of people from diverse corners of the world are coming online for the first time. These users and their contexts are very different than the ones tech is used to. How do you design products that transcend the boundaries of language, digital literacy, age, and infrastructure and yet stay true to local nuances and constructs to drive comfort and delight among users. In fact, can this be the way the design process evolves?
In this talk, we will present our journey of designing a truly accessible product - Uber Lite. We will share our playbook to approaching design for the emerging markets and the new set of users who are experiencing the internet for the first time. We plan to do this as a unique orchestration between Design and Research. The format we will use is a two-person hand-over presentation where design (Anurag) and research (Naman) bring their unique perspectives to breakdown the process of inclusive design.
