What we're about

We are a group of people who meet regularly in Uptown Manhattan to play board/tabletop games. We enjoy playing all sorts of games, from gateway games like Carcassonne to medium/heavyweight games like Through the Ages. We'd like to welcome anyone: people who are new to the tabletop world, people who are well versed and could teach us a thing or two, and anyone else who thinks they would enjoy this hobby/pastime/social-platform; our only request is that you have good sportsmanship and are tolerant of persons of all walks of life (because this hobby attracts a diverse crowd!).

Also, please check out our Discord channel to chat about games and other relevant topics of conversation:

Upcoming events (4+)

Sunday Night Gaming at Hex & Co.

Hex & Company

Join us for a weekly Sunday night board game night at Hex & Co, the board game cafe in Morningside Heights. The $10 entrance fee is paid to Hex for unlimited gaming for the day. Tell the cashier that you're with “the Meetup,” and they'll direct you to our tables in the back. Food and drink are available.

*** You must bring proof of vaccination, in accordance with the recent NYC mandate. ***

Proof of vaccination can be your vaccine card, a photo of the card, or Excelsior Pass.

*** NEW TO THE MEETUP?

Thanks for coming! We hope you enjoy yourself. A few things:

0. More than anything else, be kind at our events (the word “our” includes you, you know!)
1. We are an inclusive, social, friendly group that meets to play games. Language and behavior that is racist, sexist, ableist, ageist, transphobic, and so on, is not tolerated. We are also not a dating service. Obviously gaming can sometimes include trash talking. Just … know if your opponents are up for that! And look, we all make mistakes -- if you’ve offended someone, please just apologize.

2. Please arrive on time. By 5:30, most people will have already grouped up and started a game.
3. If you’ve reserved a spot and realize you can’t make it, please update your RSVP. We often have a waiting list, and want everyone who can play to join us.
4. The easiest way to be sure you have a game to play when you arrive is to plan ahead with others on our Discord at https://discord.gg/rYNfkpdJNE (or contact us if the link is invalid.)
5. Hex has a large library of games to borrow and just as many games for sale. They have good food options, including coffee and alcohol. See http://hexnyc.com/ for more details.

*** FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

• I’m relatively new to board gaming! Is this group for me?

Hi! Welcome to board gaming! Yes, it is. To make sure you have a great experience, please show up on time, before games get decided, and introduce yourself, telling people you’re new to gaming and what games you know and like.

We were all new to gaming once, too.

If you’re willing to stretch a bit and learn a more complex game, that’s great, as someone will almost always know how to teach it. To find out if players are willing to teach a game they’re about to start, just ask. Some experience with games like Azul, Catan, Splendor, Century Spice Road, 7 Wonders, Sagrada, etc., is helpful, but not essential.

• I'm on the waiting list. Should I come?

It should probably be fine? But before you do, check back here on Meetup to see if you’ve been moved off the waiting list, or ask in the Discord. Both this Meetup and Hex itself can fill up and sometimes have waiting lists.

• Will someone teach me games if I don’t know them?

Often, yes - you just have to ask. But planning ahead can be helpful too, because that’ll give you a chance to read the rules before you come.

• What do you mean by mid- and heavy-weight modern designer board games?

Some examples: Concordia, The Expanse Board Game, Betrayal at Baldur's Gate, Telestrations, Great Western Trail, The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31, Clank! In! Space!, Photosynthesis, Wingspan, Root, Small World, Scythe, Dinosaur Island, Terraforming Mars, Trickerion: Legends of Illusion, Kemet, Battlestar Galactica, Russian Railroads, Fury of Dracula, Underwater Cities, Food Chain Magnate, Indonesia, A Feast for Odin, Archipelago, Detective: City of Angels, and Tzolk'in.

• Can we play X?

Sure! Suggest them. Make sure someone has a playable copy (you or the store), either you or someone else knows and can teach the game, and others agree to play. Games that take an exceedingly long time (4+ hours) probably won’t get picked up.
