What we're about

Are you an urban explorer? Do you have a digital camera? Are you interested in hanging out with like-minded folks, having a good time, while documenting life in this fascinating and often funky part of the world? Yes, yes, and yes? Then you are officially anointed a "creative nomad", and you are invited to join your kindred spirits in this all-new photography-based Asheville/WNC-area MeetUp. We'll roam the streets (and trails?), seek out new life and new civilizations -- then shoot it -- share our creations, help each other out with our skills and techniques, and probably enjoy a pint (or two) together when each day's "work" is complete. The group will meet as often as there is interest (once or twice per month), on both weekends and weekdays, and in different WNC locales. All skill levels and camera types are welcome! Have camera, will wander. Will you?

Please join our Facebook Group, whether you join the MeetUp or not!

Seminar: Black-and-White Digital Conversion (and more!)

Texture Gallery & Art Bar

* * * THIS EVENT REQUIRES A FEE * * * In alignment with the B&W theme of our upcoming VPW Photo Exhibition, there appeared to be interest in having a short seminar in how to effectively convert a color image into B&W using digital software. So, here is your chance to learn a few tips and tricks to help you with your post-processing! Your MeetUp organizer, David Simchock, will be the presenter. David is a full time professional photographer with over 16 years of experience. You can learn more about him and see his work on his website: www.DavidSimchock.com The software of choice for this single-evening event will be Adobe Lightroom (with a touch of Adobe Photoshop possibly thrown in!). The following topics will be covered: * Seeing in B&W (color contrast vs tonal contrast) * Basic B&W conversion in Lightroom * Why basic B&W conversions often fall short of greatness * Using Lightroom "presets" for B&W conversion * Advanced techniques to improve your B&W photography * Using "virtual copies" in Lightroom to optimize your workflow * Hands-on B&W conversions, with a quick critique by the presenter * Other essential tips for using Lightroom as the foundation of your workflow * Q & A (please come prepared with questions) * If you have one, bring your laptop with your preferred software loaded on to the computer, along with a selection of images that you will want work on. This event is open to everyone in the MeetUp group. Space is limited to only eight people (9 including the instructor). If there is enough demand, a second date will be added. As noted above, this is a "paid" event, with proceeds covering the rental fee for the room, and for the presentation preparation and delivery. It is being offered at a highly-discounted rate from what would normally be charged. It is being held at the same venue where our exhibition will take place (Texture Gallery & Art Bar in West Asheville), so if you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, this is an opportunity to do so, while also learning a few things! At the time of this writing, there are still spaces available in the exhibition. Deadline to sign up is August 8th. You can register for the exhibition here: https://www.meetup.com/Vagabond-Photo-Walks/events/261848223/

2019 VPW Black & White Photography Exhibition - Official Registration

Texture Gallery & Art Bar

Everything is all set for our big photography exhibition this summer! This MeetUp event will serve as the main registration for the show. Please note that there is a fee of $20.00 to participate, proceeds of which go towards refreshments at the opening reception for the show, and printing of flyers (and, a little toward the MeetUp website commission for all payments). This fee is non-refundable. PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE EVENT DESCRIPTION BEFORE REGISTERING (AND BEFORE SUBMITTING ANY QUESTIONS TO THE ORGANIZER). LOCATION: The exhibition space is located at the TEXTure Gallery & Art Bar in West Asheville (1516 Patton Ave, Asheville, NC). GALLERY WEBSITE: https://www.textureartbar.com/ DATES: The exhibition will take place from August 22nd to October 22nd, 2019. OPENING RECEPTION: There will be an opening reception on Thursday, August 22nd from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. ARTWORK DROP-OFF: Pre-show artwork drop-off will be from August 8th to August 15th at the gallery during gallery operating hours (see the gallery website). The show will be hung by the gallery owners / directors. PARTICIPANTS: You must be a registered member of this MeetUp to participate, and each participant must pay the required registration fee (i.e., the $20.00 for this particular event). The maximum number of people that will be able to show their work is 18, with each person being able to hang up to two pieces. If you only want to submit / hang one piece, that is fine. Registration is "first come, first served". REGISTRATION FEE: There is a $20.00 NON-REFUNDABLE participation fee to be in the show, proceeds of which will go towards refreshments for the opening reception and publicity materials (e.g., printed posters), with a small portion covering the MeetUp org's commission fees for payments on the site. Once we hit the 18 person limit, registration for the event will be closed. Whether we hit the 18 limit or not, registration for the event will close two weeks prior to the opening reception. There will be no exceptions to this. REGISTRATION DEAD-LINE: Thursday, August 8th (12:01 am) IMAGE CONTENT: The theme for this exhibition is "Black & White" (no added colors or toning -- ONLY BLACK & WHITE). All images in the show must have been captured during one of our Vagabond Photo Walks over the past five years or so (including walks leading up to the event). There will be no exceptions. This show is as much about the community that we have built as it is about the images. All participants are free to select their own images. NO "REPEAT" WORK FROM PAST SHOWS: For those who participated in last three shows, please do not bring the same work that you had in those shows. You *MUST* have "new" material (though the date of capture can be from any time since the MeetUp was started). ARTWORK SIZE: The maximum size of all artwork is 16" x 20" (with a little extra for a frame, if needed). The absolute maximum width of the finished art should not exceed 24". PRINTING / FRAMING: All participants are responsible for printing and framing their own work. Examples of presentation are framed/matted fine art prints (w/ glass); stretched canvas prints; prints on aluminum; etc. Artwork should be wired and ready to hang (no "saw-tooth" hangers, please; exception to wire hangers for unframed metal/acrylic prints only). Note that the TEXTure Gallery & Art Bar folks offer an affordable printing and framing service, so you may want to check with them before going elsewhere. EVENT MARKETING: Marketing and publicity for the event will be led by the gallery and by the MeetUp leader, David Simchock, with assistance from anyone else who wants to pitch in. We are anticipating a lot of media attention for this event! ARTWORK PRICING / GALLERY COMMISSION: All participants are required to submit pricing information for their work. The gallery will manage all sales, and will take a 40% commission (60% goes to the artist). Please keep this in mind when calculating your price (e.g., price of materials, plus gallery commission) such that you are at least breaking even on your sales (unless you are okay with losing money on each sale). The gallery will manage any NC sales taxes. All sold artwork will be taken off the wall when purchased. In this case, the artist will be notified, and given the opportunity to hang another piece within one week of the sale. If they choose not to hang another piece, the opportunity will be given to others who are already participating in the show, with the open space allocated to the first person who agrees to hang another piece. MATTED / LOOSE PRINTS: For the duration of the show, print racks/bins will be available for participants to display and sell matted and/or loose prints. Like the main artwork, all images should be from our photo walks (color or B&W are okay for the print bins). Each artist can bring up to five (5) prints, maximum size of 16" x 20", protected in plastic. Loose prints should have some sort of rigid cardboard in the sleeve to prevent bending/creasing of the print. All bin art should be clearly labeled with the artist's name and price. All bin art sales can be taken home by the purchaser when purchased. All remaining bin art must be removed at the end of the show. VOLUNTEERS: There will be a need for volunteers to help with publicity, and a few other tasks. It is assumed that everyone will play a role in getting the word out about the show. The more people we get to see the show, the more likely we are to sell our work! QUESTIONS: If anyone has any questions about the exhibition, please contact the MeetUp leader, David Simchock ([masked]). Please read these guidelines carefully and thoroughly before submitting any questions. Thank you! This is a fantastic opportunity for this MeetUp, and if the show is anything like the last three years, those attending are in for a treat. And, for those participating, it will be a very educational and enjoyable experience. Thank you in advance to all who choose to participate!
