- Call for New Leadership
- Presentation April 22nd - Why Android? - event is heavily wait-listed.
- New Networking Meetup Group for Developers
- Thanks to: UBC Robson Square, O'Reilly, and our volunteers

VanDev has been a great success and after almost 6 years and over 60 events I'm finding that my budget of about 2 hours a week is increasingly taken up in just managing the Meetup group and lately I'm not even keeping up with that (my apologies if I've failed to respond to a request that you made). This leaves little time for producing events. I need to cut back. I'm competent at organizing but I'm not so good at inspiring others to jump in to take an active role in running the group and that's what we really need right now. VanDev needs new leadership.

So talk among your friends and help me to find people that will take VanDev to the next level. Ideally there would be 3 to 5 people that would form a core group and they would elect one among them as the new organizer.

I'll keep updating the calendar and I'll still organize a few events a year, at least for a while, but I'm going to start cutting other services, such as our LinkedIn group, unless someone wants to take over for me.

--> PRESENTATION 7pm Thursday Apr 22: Why Android? -- event is heavily wait-listed.

As you have probably noticed, this month's presentation event has more people on the waiting list than on the RSVP list. As a joint event we've tried to fairly split the RSVP allocation between the groups but it's guesswork at best. I've just increased the limit for each group by 5 seats and enabled a waiting list for the Android group.

We have 50 seats in total. We can handle a reasonable number of standees but at the core of our agenda are the round-the-room introductions which work best for about 35 to 45 participants. When the attendance is over 50 the introductions start taking too long and it becomes exhausting to try to hear everyone speak. That said, we don't check RSVPs and we always have no-shows in the RSVP list so...

... please COME IF YOU'RE REALLY KEEN, and please KEEP YOUR RSVP UP-TO-DATE so that others can make an informed decision.

As regular attendees know, this will be a fairly short presentation so that we have time for networking. If you're looking for more depth then you should check out the Android Meetup Group which has another event the next week (see

BTW, Jerome, the organizer for the Android Meetup Group, is stuck in Europe until the volcanic ash clears and probably won't be able to attend. I was really looking forward to his contributions to the discussion.

There has been a request to stream or post a video of the presentation. Any volunteers?

As you probably know, the social events held at Waves Coffee House are now organized through a separate Meetup group, the Vancouver Software Developers Social Network (see This gives Yosri, the organizer, the ability to try different things with the group without depending on me to keep up and without needing to address all the other needs of the VanDev membership. Please be sure to join the new group if you're interested to be sure of getting its event announcements.

Special thanks to the staff at UBC Robson Square for providing our meeting space and to O'Reilly for donating books as door prizes.

UBC Robson Square:

Also thanks to our special volunteers:

- Kim Kulak: O'Reilly contact and door prize management,
- Yosri and Frances for organizing the social meetups, and
