title and abstract for this talk

    Building Reactive Apps

Non-blocking, asynchronous, and reactive programming models are all the rage today. This session will explore in-depth why these patterns are important in modern apps. We will drill down and see how to apply them to event-driven web, mobile, and RESTful apps. To illustrate the concepts, we will use Java, Scala, Akka, and the Play Framework as examples.

Super excited to announce that James Ward (http://www.jamesward.com/) from typesafe will be flying down to meet with us all. This is going to be amazing as James is a Reactive evangelist .. and several orders of magnitude better qualified to talk about reactive. Super excited !!!

Meetup location confirmed. Would like to thank Unbounce for letting us use their space... there is also rumors of beer ;)

Quick update everyone. I am in the process of confirming a space right now. If that one falls through I will be trying some of the other suggestions in the order I received them.

I would like to get anyone that is comfortable speaking about there experience with reactive or to walk us through a project that they have done. Please contact me if you are interested in this.

    looking to start 6:30pm

    6:30 - 7:00 - Introduction to reactive programming
    7:00 - 7:30 - Walkthrough of a reactive application I made (Scala/Play2/Reactive Mongo/WebSockets)

    .. TBA

We can leave some of the deep dives into specifics (Futures/Akka/ect.) for future events (no pun intended)

End with Questions, Socialize, and beers. There could even be some typesafe swag ;)

Let me know if you would like to add/modify anything for the event.

    Thanks,
    Corey

Well don't wait too long, spaces do fill up

Burnaby would be great, since I don't work downtown (yet). We have a community meeting space in building where Arista Networks is located. I'll look into how to reserve it.

Hootsuite is centrally located, has a large space, and has hosted the AWS meetup. They have Owls.. not sure if that satisfies the 'cool' requirement.

hmm.. I don't have a direct contact (perhaps one of the other members does) but you might try contacting the folks running the Amazon Web Services meetup to see how to approach Hootsuite. Reactive to some people might mean a lack of forethought - to others it might mean a group that tracks recent developments in Big Data and related technologies (i.e. Open Stack) without getting too tied up in specific implementations. That might interest Hootsuite and could possibly get speakers from outfits like Coho Data, if they have time.

That probably seems like I'm trying to direct the conversation.. i'm just one member. I do feel obligated to point out that there are a lot of fast coders out there.
Hope it helps in any case :).

if you're aiming for a hackathon-style coder meetup, Hackspace might be worth a look. I know other meetups use them, but there may be a fee.

We can probably offer up our space here at Unbounce. Just ping [masked] and tell her Carl sent you. ;-)

Awesome Carl .. thanks ! I will send her the message.
