Live Opera in Vancouver!

From: user 9.
Sent on: Wednesday, June 3, 2009 10:18 AM
We would like to invite you to join us at an upcoming performance of Opera Pro Cantanti, Canada's only repertory opera company...right here in Vancouver!

Each year, we present several great operas from the standard repertoire. As a repertory company we alternate these operas throughout our season. We perform using traditional sets and costumes, created by the company members themselves. Our 100-seat performance venue is several times smaller than professional opera houses (which often seat well over a thousand people.) This intimate setting brings the opera closer to the audience, condensing all of the passion and intensity and allowing the
audience increased communication and connection with the singers.

Our singers include some of the best voices in Vancouver, singers whose power, technical ability, artistry and expressiveness rival those of singers on the great stages. You will be amazed at what you hear and see.

Join us for thrilling opera. The cost is by donation and you pay what you can afford. If you love great singing and powerful
drama in an intimate setting, Opera Pro Cantanti is the best artistic experience Vancouver has to offer.

We perform on Sunday evenings, starting at 7:30 pm, in the Cambrian Hall at[masked]th Ave, just off Main Street.

La Traviata, Sunday, June 7 at 7:30 pm.

La Traviata is perhaps the most beloved of all operas. Social pressures, combined with tragic misunderstandings, lead to a son's despair, a father's regret and a doomed courtesan's expression of the purest love.  At the same time, this tragic tale gives life to some of the most joyful and memorable melodies of all time.  Opera Pro Cantanti's thrilling production stars soprano Emily MacKinnon as Violetta, Tenor Paul Duerichen as Alfredo, and baritone Richard Williams as Germont. Other OPC singers include Susanna Britnell (Flora), Avis Picton (Baron), Bodo Ellendt (Doctor), Cate Nelson-McDermott (Gaston), Stephanie Manchulenko (Annina), and Lawrence Cantrell (Marquis). Yawen Wang will be at the piano.  Don't miss this passionate and heart-felt drama.

When:   Sunday, June 7 at 7:30 pm

Where:  The Cambrian Hall (Welsh Society), 215 East 17th Ave. Just one door east of  Main Street.

Cost:  That's up to you. This is an OPC pay-what-you-can Open House.

Please note that there will be no opera on Sunday, June 14 as we prepare for our Gala on Friday, June 19. See below.

Opera Gala-Marathon -- A date for your calendar:

On Friday, June 19, 2009 at 6:30 pm, Opera Pro Cantanti presents its second annual gala-marathon of great opera singing. Come and hear our great lead singers and our wonderful comprimario singers sing your favourite selections from the past two seasons (La Traviata, I Puritani, Rigoletto, Lucia di Lammermoor.) As well, we will present highlights from the coming season's new productions: Verdi's Macbeth, Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, Bart?k's Bluebeard's Castle, and Menotti's The Old Maid and the Thief.  Two celebratory intermissions will offer you an opportunity to socialize with our singers while you enjoy a piece of opera cake.

Because we love to sing so much and have so much exciting music to present, this will be a long evening. Feel free to come and go as you wish. We will seat new arrivals during the evening whenever there are breaks between numbers.

The price is $20 per person and tickets can be purchased at this Sunday's OPC performance of Traviata, or at the door of the Gala-Marathon (but come early to ensure ticket availability!) Be sure to note our earlier start time: 6:30 pm.

This promises to be a true highlight of Vancouver's opera season. Don't miss it!
