What we're about

***UPDATE: Long Island is still at "COVID Risk Level: Yellow" according to this new risk-assessment map - https://globalepidemics.org/key-metrics-for-covid-suppression/ Remember: it's possible to infect others before you have any symptoms. That's what makes this virus especially contagious—people spread it before they know they have it—and that's why keeping physical distance and mask-wearing will help get Long Island down to Risk Level Green. At Vegan Long Island, we're listening to public health experts who acknowledge that "risk thresholds" and circumstances differ from individual to individual. So we are encouraging responsible, risk-reducing behaviors. Meeting online is zero risk. Outdoor gatherings are lower risk than indoor ones. Staying 10 feet apart (from others who aren't part of your household) is lower risk than 6 feet apart. A smaller number of attendees is lower risk than a larger number of attendees. For more considerations for preventing spread at events, visit this page: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/large-events/considerations-for-events-gatherings.html
May we all stay well, physically as well as mentally. Feel free to use VLI's message board (or Forum on Facebook) to connect with others online.***

xpost: Zoom plant-based cooking class: Avoiding Environmental Chemicals

-posted by Jennifer G. for Laurie C.- This class reviews common chemical exposures and how to avoid them to keep you and your family safe. Common chemicals addressed include BPA, phthalates, pesticides, and hormones. Practical tips are provided for limiting exposure to these chemicals including eating plant-based foods. Participants will participate in discussions, enjoy a cooking demonstration of 3 recipes that avoid environmental chemicals and cook along with the instructor if they would like. Laurie Courage is a Food for Life certified instructor with the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine. Pre-registration is required. Early bird and buddy discounts are available. Each registration is good for one device so it is a great time to attend as a couple for a single registration. Price is $25; get $5 off with Early Bird tickets purchased at least 1 week in advance or buddy discounts when purchasing 2 or more tickets. Eventbrite fees apply. Use this Eventbrite page to sign up for the class and save your spot: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/avoiding-environmental-chemicals-plant-based-nutrition-and-cooking-registration-109054198042 Some exciting news: All registered attendees who participate and complete a survey at the end of the class will be automatically enrolled in a drawing for a Vitamix kit valued at $750! The Long Island class will be offered via Zoom. Instructions with handouts and recipes will be sent to confirmed participants via email a few days prior to class to give any participant that wishes the opportunity to cook along together during cooking demonstrations! Just because we may be staying close to home doesn’t mean we can’t taste delicious food (and share with our sheltering buddies). How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Please contact Laurie via the Eventbrite page. She will try to respond quickly. You can also call her at[masked]. What's the refund policy? Is my registration fee or ticket transferable? xpost: Zoom plant-based cooking class: A Healthy Thyroid

-posted by Jennifer G. for Laurie C.- Our thyroid gland regulates your body’s use of energy. If it is not producing enough hormones (hypothyroidism), we may feel sluggish. If it is overproducing hormones (hyperthyroidism), we may feel revved up with a rapid pulse and other symptoms. There is evidence that those who follow a plant-based diet, void of meat and dairy, are significantly less likely to get thyroid problems. This class will set you on the right foot for following a healthful, plant-based diet with simple yet delicious recipes. In addition, participants will enjoy a cooking demonstration of 3 recipes and have the option to cook along with the instructor if they choose. Laurie Courage is a Food for Life certified instructor with the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine. Pre-registration is required. Early bird and buddy discounts are available.
