35 Dowling Street, Dunedin
It's the first ever Super Fabulous EXTRA SPECIAL 2016 DOVeS/VARS End-of-Year Christmas/Kirīhimete/Xmas/Solstice/Summer Vegan Potluck!!! :-D
It is happening on Sunday the 11th of December from 12pm till 2pm at ‘The Apartment’ at 35 Dowling Street in the inner city. *
The Ōtepoti/Dunedin vegan community has just been going from strength to strength over 2016, and we think that this extra special event will be the perfect end to an awesome year. :-)
Theme and Decorations: We will have festive Christmas/Kirīhimete/Xmas/Solstice/Summer themed decorations. If you want to bring your own, you are welcome to come early and help us set up, starting at 11am. You can even dress up in festive themed clothing if you like! (But you don't have to). The themes are open to interpretation, but as long as we are all respectful of each others' beliefs and values, this is a great chance to get creative. :-)
Secret Santa: Although there's no pressure to do so, we'd like to encourage everyone to bring a small gift, (or two?, or three?), to put under the tree. We will give them out after the meal. Just something small though. Ideally, gifts should not cost more than $5 or so. Because many of us care about the environment and aren't into tacky commercialism, the organising team have all agreed: no cheap, nasty '$2 Shop' type junk, please.
Ideally a good gift might even be something recycled or upcycled. Or maybe even home-made/hand-made. Maybe a good 2nd hand vegan recipe book, or a nice book about animals? Perhaps a nice candle (maybe even home-made? But not made from bees wax, please!)? A painted mug or other ornament/object with an animal/vegan message on it? A gift-wrapped potted herb plant or some other sort of plant in a pot? Maybe a small box/bag with some vegan treats that can be commonly found at the supermarket? Or how about some nicely wrapped home-made vegan treats? Or maybe something cheap from Trade Aid, Lush, Taste Nature, or one of Dunedin's other more ethical shops? Or maybe you will have your own ideas?
Food and Drink: You are also invited to bring along some Christmas/Kirīhimete/Xmas/Solstice/Summer festive themed vegan food. (But there's no pressure to do so. Any food is fine, as long as it's vegan.)
You are also welcome to bring your own drinks: either alcoholic, or non alcoholic. But if people choose to drink alcohol, we expect them to do so responsibly, and in moderation, and to have arrangements in place for getting home safely.
Please note that some alcoholic drinks are not vegan. You can find a good list of vegan beers and wines here at Barnivore
(You can choose New Zealand brands from most of the pages) and here at A Guide to Vegan (all New Zealand)
Music: Local vegan musicians Jason Wieblitz and Duke McLeod are going to play some nice, cruisey, ambient live music for us while we eat and chat. :-D
As with any of the DOVeS/VARS events, the aim of these gatherings is to enjoy delicious vegan food with like-minded people in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Everyone is welcome at our potlucks; vegans and non-vegans alike. Children are most welcome too. So feel free to invite your friends and family, (either using the 'Invite' button on this page, or by word of mouth, etc.)
!!! Note: Please bring a gold coin to help cover the cost of the venue !!!
We encourage everyone to bring a vegan dish to share. If you’re unsure what to bring, there are many good websites with easy vegan recipes. Vegan food doesn't have to be fancy though. It can be as simple as tossing together a fresh fruit salad, or bringing a bowl of hummus, with chips or a platter of crunchy vegetables for dipping. Even if you’re unable to bring a dish, please join us anyway: your company is what’s important!
See you there! :-)
